GEORGE ROBB PASSES AWAY

The Club are sad to announce that George Robb passed away on Christmas Day at the age of 85. Robb, one of the last amateurs to play in the top division, joined Finchley at the age of 18 and signed amateur forms for Spurs at the same time.

He played for Finchley and Spurs as an amateur until 1953 when he finally signed professional forms for Spurs. He was a key part of the famous Push and Run team of Arthur Rowe and in 1956 played for England against ‘’The Mighty Magyars‘’ at Wembley when England lost 6-3. This was his only senior England cap. He remains the only player to have played for Finchley to win a Senior England Cap. George continued to play at Spurs until 1958 when serious injury forced retirement at the age of 32 and he went back to his chosen profession as a school teacher, teaching in Finchley until his retirement. We take this opportunity of saluting The Finchley legend and wishing all his family a long and healthy life.

NEW SIGNING FOR THE BLUES

Wingate & Finchley are delighted to announce the signing of 21 year old Max Mitchell. Mitchell plays either in the hole behind the striker or out wide, and his main strength is his technical ability and he has been a proven goalscorer in particular at Tony Faulkner's old side Ware.

The forward, who has also previously played for Cambridge City, Harlow Town and Waltham Abbey, signed on Tuesday, instantly making his debut in playing 90 minutes in the fascinating 3-2 win over Bury Town later that evening.

He also has a contract with Adidas and can be found appearing in their recent "Hunt For The Fast" campaign with Ashley Young, Lionel Messi, Gareth Bale, David Silva and others HERE:

YOUTH ROUND UP

There was mixed luck for the youth teams in Middlesex County Cup action this week. The U13's had a long trip top Kempton Park and were beaten by a strong team narrowly losing 3-2.  The Wingate & Finchley goals came from Luke and Paolo.  After the game our manger said that the boys played well and that the team they lost to will be strong contenders for getting to the final.

The U16 Beds teams beat Sandgate 4-2 to reach the Semi- final where they will play Sandgate’s other team in the competition for a place in the final. While some teams were in cup action others returned to the league and there were good wins for the U17's winning 8-2 over Tilbury - which included a hat trick for in form striker Andreas Kyprianou. However the U15's played well but lost 3-1 to Bishop Stortford

PRAISE FOR DISABILITY INITIATIVE

Hugh Robertson, Minster for Sport & Olympics, has heaped huge praise on Wingate & Finchley's disability initiatives: “It is great to hear the amazing work Wingate & Finchley FC are doing to ensure that members of the community with a disability have the opportunity to learn how to play football.

It is inspiring to hear how the project has grown and that the club plan to work with people with mental health issues next year”

With the Club's Down Syndrome Association sessions starting to grow and the introduction of a third team in the Step League, the disability project is going from strength to strength.

There are big plans for 2012 with the proposed introduction of work with people with mental health issues and Cerebral Palsy, and the future looks bright for the most progressive club outside the football league.

The Club now has one of the biggest in-house specialist disability projects in London and is continually growing. For any further information please contact Ricky Deller at rickydeller@hotmail.co.uk

WINGATE & FINCHLEY 5  KENTISH TOWN 3

(Slade 2, Dickens 2, Burke))

A young Wingate & Finchley team came back from 3-1 down to beat a Kentish Town side that had a number of good opportunities to kill the game off. The Wingate starting line-up included former Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham striker Steve Slade and he was on the score sheet twice, as was substitute Jamie Dickens.

In a disappointing first half, Wingate & Finchley had a good chance to go ahead ten minutes into the game when Tanasheh Abrahams made a darting run down the left and played it into the area in front of Slade, but he was unable get the touch needed. Kentish Town themselves then came really close, hitting the bar before the Blues took the lead on 25 minutes. Dave Norman won the ball in the middle of the field and played it to Tony Burke, who was able to release Slade to put it past the keeper.

The visitors equalised ten minutes later through their number 7 Junior and he put the side 2-1 up just before the break from the spot after teammate Adam Murad was fouled in the area. It could have been three seconds later but their player connected poorly with a great ball into the area and headed into Al-Droubi’s hands.

That third goal did come minutes after the restart, this time Murad the scorer. Play was then interrupted after heavy challenge on Joe Sharpe, who went down in agony clutching his ankle and had to be stretchered off. Kentish Town again hit the bar but after that Wingate began to get back into the game. Abrahams had a shot just tipped over and then Jamie Dickens made it 3-2 with a good effort from the left. Slade was again on hand for the Blues’ equaliser, and Wingate’s fourth followed shortly, a great goal as Tony Burke started and finished a fantastic move. Dickens then added a fifth in injury time to seal the comeback.

Team: Al-Droubi, Sharpe(Kypianou), Williams(Dickens), Norman, Murray-Bruce(Fisher), O’Connor, Burke, Megicks, Slade, Laird, Abrahams
