YOUTH ROUND UP

There were four wins and a defeat this week to report as five Wingate youth teams took to the field on a very blustery morning, all sides with home advantage.

There were goals from Franco, George, Paolo and Harry as the U13's had a convincing 4-1 win over Grays Athletic.

The Under 15’s were not so lucky which saw almost the same amount of goals but were on the end of a 3-1 defeat.

Both the Under 16’s teams kept clean sheets and produced good victories. The Under 16 Beds team running out 5-0 winners against Tilbury. The Under 16 Herts team beat Tonbridge Angels 4-0 in the London U16 Youth Cup to reach the Quarter finals which will played early in the New Year. The Under 17's beat Ryan 5-3 with goals coming from Cam Wallis, two from Gavin Suddell, Andreas Kyprianou and was topped off by a 30 yard screamer from Angelo D'Alessio

YOUTH ROUND UP

It was four wins out of six for the Wingate & Finchley Youth teams this week. The U18’s led the way with a 7-2 win over Dulwich Hamlet to make it through to the Quarter finals of the London U18 Cup. The U17's had a slightly harder task as they fought hard to come from 2-0 down to win 4-2 after extra time in the Eastern Junior Alliance league cup game against Burnham Ramblers.

There were also hard fought wins for both the U16 Beds who beat Shefford Saints 3-0 and the U14’s who beat Ryan 2-1. There were however defeats for the U13 and U15. The U13 went down to a single goal in the second half by East Thurrock in well contested match with both teams playing good football. The U15 had a tougher time and went down 4-1 to Hitchin Town.

Presidents Cup Round 2

WINGATE & FINCHLEY 9  ASHFORD TOWN 3

(Jones 3, Leon Smith 2, Cooper 2, Suddell, OG)

There were goals galore at Summers Lane last night as a Wingate team featuring seven youth players and a number of first teamers brushed aside Ashford Town to progress into the third round of the Presidents Challenge Cup. Lewis Jones scored another hat-trick, Leon Smith and Josh Cooper both got two and Gavin Suddell scored his first goal for the reserves.

Wingate put out a strong side, with Jones, Smith, Cooper and Tanasheh Abrahams all starting, despite having played a part in the Charity Shield defeat the night before. Manager Dave Norman also took his place in the XI and he could have had an assist within the first thirty seconds after he passed through to Cooper who hit the bar. It was Ashford, however, who took the lead after five minutes, when the ball was played across the area from the left and their number 10 was on hand to poke it in.

Four minutes later, Leon Smith ran through on goal and the Ashford keeper parried his effort away but the ball fell to Lewis Jones to equalise. Wingate continued to create chances, and Cooper set Jones up for a second on 19. Things then got worse for the visitors when Ola Williams curled a ball into the area and it fell in front of their number 2, who took a poor touch to run it past the goalkeeper.

Williams was again involved in the Blue’s fourth. He ran the length of the field and slotted through to Cooper, whose first effort was saved but he scored at the second attempt. And it was five just seconds later after the Ashford keeper committed himself and Smith was able to casually place the ball into an empty net. A second for Smith quickly followed when Jones hooked over a cross that set our top scorer free and he shrugged off a backtracking Ashford defender to make it six.

Following Wingate’s dominance in the entertaining first half, Ashford returned to the field looking much more assured. They got an early penalty and their no 9 coolly slot it past Gavin King. Anthony Murray-Bruce replaced Norman on sixty minutes to make his reserve team debut, before a handball just outside the area allowed Ashford to get a third from the resulting free-kick.

But after that Wingate got back into their stride. Jones released Smith down the right and he looped a ball across the area and Suddell was on hand to head home. There was another debut, this time for Seb Garber who took over from Smith and he had an instant impact, playing a lovely back heel to Jones who was able to score his third of the night, before Josh Cooper completed the rout.

Team: King, Williams, Abrahams (Dickens), Norman (Murray-Bruce), O’Connor, Sharpe, Suddell, Megicks, L.Smith (Garber), Jones, Cooper

YOUTH ROUND UP

It was County Cup weekend and the U13, U14 and U16 Beds teams all progressed to the last 16 of the Middlesex County Cup. There was also good news for the U16 Herts team who also triumphed over Redbridge in the League Cup. However there were narrow defeats for the U17 and U18 who both narrowly lost in their respective cup games. The U17 lost 2-1 to Kensington Dragons to a last minute goal and the U18 went down 4-3 on penalties to Romford after a 3-3 draw after extra time.

YOUTH ROUND UP

The Under 13’s got back to winning ways this week as they grounded out a 2-0 win in the League Cup Quarter Final to send them through to the Semi Finals. With seven minutes to go a well-worked goal ending with a good finish by Franco broke the deadlock. In the final minute Wingate got a second on the counter with the opposition pushing for an equaliser.

The only other positive result from the weekend came from the U17 who beat Barking 6-3 away.

There were however defeats for the U15 the U16’s Bed team and U18 who lost 2-0, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. It must be mentioned that although the U15’s are struggling and have not found a win yet this season, the Kings Langley coach summed up the game by saying "This is the best footballing side we've played against". Hopefully this should give the U15’s encouragement and produce a win which is overdue!

Capital League Western Division

HARROW BOROUGH 2 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 4

Wingate & Finchley secured their fourth consecutive Capital League win with a comfortable victory over Harrow Borough. David Laird was the star man on the night, scoring a first half hat-trick and the game also marked a return to action for Lewis Jones and Gary Burrell, who both managed 45 minutes.

In what Tony Faulkner described as a ‘good mature performance’, Wingate went into the lead in the opening ten minutes when Laird took a down a cross and side-footed into the net with a neat finish. Harrow, who had won 1-0 in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season, responded almost immediately when one of their players spotted Gavin King off his line. The speculative effort, from around 40 yards out, sailed over his head to level the score.

On twenty minutes, however, Wingate created another chance down the left flank. Paul Wright was able to play the ball onto Laird’s chest and the striker took it under control and stroked it past the Boro goalkeeper. Laird’s treble was complete five minutes before half-time as he found himself in a one-on-one situation and confidently chipped it over the keeper.

Wingate continued to create chances after the break and they had a number of chances to increase their lead, the best of which was an unfortunate miss for the energetic Lewis Jones, who rounded the Harrow keeper but put it wide.

With the hour mark fast approaching, John Megicks made sure of the points and hit a great dipping volley from 25 yards into the bottom left hand corner. Harrow got a late consolation when the ball was poked home following a goalmouth scramble but the Blues were able to close the gap between the two sides to six points, with Wingate having four games in hand.

Team:

Gavin King, Ola Williams, Joe O'Connor, Ahmet Rifat (Tenashi), Paul Wright, Josh Cooper (Jordan Fowler) John Megicks, Joe O'Brien, Chris Chase, David Laird, Lewis Jones (Gary Burrell)

YOUTH ROUND UP

There were not many games for the Wingate youth team this week as it was half term for most of the boys. There was mixed fortune for the teams who were in action.

There was a much needed win for the U14’s who won 4-0 at Grays.

However there was not much luck for the Under 17 and Under 18 who were both beaten on Sunday.

The Under U17 put on a brave performance at table topping Thurrock and were beaten 2-1 by a last minute winning goal.

The Under 18 suffered their first defeat of the season to in form Ilford who as a result replace Wingate at the top of the league.
