Capital League Western Division

KENTISH TOWN 0 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 3

Wingate & Finchley strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win against Kentish Town at the Copthall Stadium on Monday evening, which featured a debut from highly rated 16 year old goalkeeper Seb Santos. Santos has been in inspired form for the Ryman Youth team this season, and capped a commanding performance with a clean sheet on his senior debut.

An experienced Wingate side controlled the game from the start and went into the break 2-0 up at half time with goals from Chris Chase and Murat Karagul. With reserve team manager Dean Smith departing the club earlier in the year Dave Norman took charge.

Chris Chase added his second and Wingate’s 3rd in the second half, in a win that moves the side up to 4th place in the Capital League Western Division with games in hand.

Wingate & Finchley FC have expanded their acclaimed Football in the Community programme by creating a new partnership with the Down Syndrome Association (DSA).  The partnership aims to provide regular coaching sessions for children who may otherwise feel excluded from or intimidated by mainstream football programmes.  The partnership was forged after it was established that there was a lack of provision in the North London area for this particular target group. As one parent commented during the sign-up phase: "It's fantastic to have something on our doorstep rather than driving across London every other week"

The initial taster session took place at the ground on Saturday 15th October and saw well over twenty players between the ages of 5 & 25 take part, making it a very successful pilot. The new scheme will run in conjunction with the club’s well established Barnet Mencap link up, and is testament to the vision and endeavour of the Blues’ volunteer staff who promote a ‘football for all’ ethos.

Disability Project Manager Ricky Deller commented: “We anticipate the DSA project to grow rapidly and hope to have two teams in place by the end of the year. Providing sporting opportunities for players of all ages, backgrounds and abilities is something we remain passionate about, particularly with the Olympics and its positive messages arriving here in London next year”

Mike Freer, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, also attended the day, advising it was “wonderful to see community clubs like Wingate & Finchley FC supporting children and young adults in this way.” These sentiments were echoed by Wingate & Finchley chairman Aron Sharpe, who stressed: “we pride ourselves on the development of players who often wouldn’t get chance to play and grow at other clubs, The Wingate & Finchley DSA Active project is testament to that commitment”

The club are continually looking for local organisations to build relationships with, specifically where sports participation can affect positive change.
