Arlesey Town 0-2 Wingate & Finchley
Tuesday 4th March 2008
Wingate & Finchley returned to winning ways with a thoroughly deserved away victory at old foes Arlesey Town, this despite being down to ten men for an hour of the match.

The Blues played a fluid passing game and pressed for the early goal. Dean Nyman came the closest as his shot from a wide angle flicked off a defender and smashed into the crossbar. However Wingate & Finchley could not turn all their possession into goals and it looked as though they would pay the price when a penalty was awarded to Arlesey Town after a foul by Billy Amarteifio in the area. Gavin King stood firm though and fantastically saved Lee Tekell's attempt with an outsretched left arm.

This save gave the visitors renewed confidence, and a beautiful flowing move in the 23rd minute helped them deservedly open the scoring. The ball started with Craig Ellis in the centre circle who played a pass wide to Andy Edmunds who was advancing down the left wing. He crossed the ball to Dean Nyman over on the right side who, having played a one-two with Joe O'Brien, bore down on the keeper. Nyman took the ball around the keeper and squared it back to Edmunds and he sidefooted the ball into the roof of the net from 15 yards over a wall of defenders.

The game changed on the half-hour mark as Wingate & Finchley were reduced to ten men. After a group of players gathered following the award of a free kick, Ahmet Rifat was adjudged by the referee to have acted aggresively in squaring up to an opponent and was sent off - much to the bemusement of the crowd.

This did not deter the Blues though as they continued to press. Craig Ellis played a 50 yard crossfield ball to set Dean Nyman clear but he shot early and wide. Then a minute before the break came the crucial second goal. A corner from Jerome Boyce was perfectly weighted and Billy Amarteifio rose high and headed home an unstoppable powerful effort to double his side's lead.

Wingate & Finchley were clearly the better team even in the second half, although the ten men understandably began to tire as the half wore on. Gavin King made two more assured saves from the edge of the area as Arlesey often found the Wingate defence too hard to break down.

With the Arlesey keeper beaten after Edmunds had quickly beaten the offside trap, he squared the ball back to Nyman outside the area but his shot at a seemingly open goal was blocked by a desperate lunge from a defender.

Edmunds had a shot himself when he sent an audacious lob from wide of the box only inches off target beyond the far post, but the Blues stuck to their second-half task of defending resolutely and held on for the first win and first clean sheet since early January.

Wingate & Finchley: Gavin King, Marc Weatherstone, Kieran Street, Craig Ellis, Billy Amarteifio, Ahmet Rifat, Joe O'Brien, Jerome Boyce, Daniel Clarke (Bernard Collignon 80), Dean Nyman (James Gershfield 58), Andy Edmunds (Tashan Bradshaw-Brown 70). Subs: David Allen, Theo Morris.
