Wingate & Finchley 2-0 Arlesey Town
Tuesday 16th August 2007
On a cold and wet Tuesday night, it was Arlesey Town who adapted quickest to the zippy surface - forward Brett Donnelly had two glorious chances early on in the game. After only two minutes he was put through on goal down the left side but home goalkeeper Gavin King, making his home debut, spread himself well and blocked the shot commandingly. From a corner later on in the half, Donnelly rose at the near post but his flicked header went inches over. Wingate & Finchley’s first good chance of the game was created through the tireless Daniel Clarke. A quick free kick was launched upfield which Clarke controlled perfectly - with his back – he then cut inside but hooked the ball wide with his shot on the edge of the area.

The second half was a more entertaining affair as better chances were created and possession was better utilised. Early in the second half a long ball fell to Donnelly at the back post but the angle was against him and he could only find the side netting.

Joe O’Brien tried to force the play for Wingate & Finchley and took a pot-shot from 30 yards – Arlesey’s goalkeeper Luke Bliss could only watch as the ball arrowed inches wide of the far post. Daniel Stanton played a seemingly impossible through-ball whilst facing towards his own goal to feed in Clarke. Clarke bore down on goal but his shot past the keeper but rolled agonisingly wide of the left upright. The breakthrough came in the 64th minute with a wonderful goal from Tashan Bradshaw-Brown. Daniel Clarke crossed the ball towards the left side of the area and it was only half cleared by the defender. It fell at the feet of Bradshaw-Brown who took a touch to set himself before launching a shot across the keeper that landed perfectly in the far right corner. Arlesey seemed to suffer when they went a goal behind and from here Wingate & Finchley ended the game firmly in the ascendancy.

The win was sealed in the 83rd minute when Calvin Petrie scored to double the home side’s lead. An Arlesey throw-in was directed back towards a defender, however he left the ball in the hope that it would roll back to Bliss in goal. However Petrie was the quickest to react and his long legs gathered the ball first. He took the ball around Bliss and calmly clotted into the unguarded net, sparking scenes of wild celebration as the whole squad gathered on the half-way line. James Gershfield came close to scoring a third when he shrugged off his marker and unleashed an amazing swerving drive from 30 yards that grazed the roof of the next on its way over. After some excellent skillful work from Joe O’Brien and Mus Dumbuya down the right flank, the ball was squared in to Petrie who shot on the turn but his effort was low and wide.

With this confidence boosting win Wingate & Finchley jumped four places up the league table, and they host high-flying Enfield Town on Saturday.
