Wingate & Finchley 4-0 Ashford Town
Middx Challenge Cup 2nd Round - Tuesday 12th December 2006
Wingate & Finchley progressed into the Quarter Finals of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup where they visitors to the Abrahams Stadium will be Harrow Borough who number in their ranks Daniel Neilsen. With Ashford Town being in the FA Trophy on Saturday this was a chance for Ashford Town to get added confidence ahead of that game but it was the Blues who, apart from a sticky opening twenty minutes, dominated the game and took the lead seven minutes before the interval when DEAN WILLIAMS received the ball some thirty yards out and spotting Burgess way off his line finished superbly to continue his chase of Andy Myers to became the Blues leading scorer since they joined the Ryman League.

The game was all but secured two minutes before the break when LEON OSEI collected the ball just inside the Ashford Town half and embarked on a jinking run through the visiting ranks showing excellent ball control before waiting for Burgess to advance and doubling the Blues lead. At this point the problems that had been brewing in the Ashford ranks came to a head with two players remonstrating with each other and Jon Hamsher walking off the pitch to take no further part in the game. Eight minutes after the restart Guy Helman charged forward and fizzed a cross along the six yard line with no Blues player able to get the touch that would have sealed the match.

After the introduction of Chris West and Daniel Stanton it was total Blues domination with Stanton seeing an effort cannon off the cross bar and from Leon Osei’s follow up cross Dean Williams just failed to get a touch but it was not to be long before Williams got his second when from a Stanton defence splitting pass DEAN WILLIAMS ran through and finished expertly. WILLIAMS completed his treble four minutes from time when Leon Osei cross was clawed away by Burgess into the path of Williams who finished easily for his third of the night.

This was a victory the Blues deserved and needed after three successive defeats and they will face Arlesey Town on Saturday with confidence high.
