Aveley 1-2 Wingate & Finchley
Saturday 7th April 2007

Wingate and Finchley travelled to Aveley in the hope of reviving their season after a run of eight games without a win. In this hard fought encounter the Blues produced the desired result and their first win since defeating Ilford 5-1 in early March thamks to a Guy Morris penalty and a header from recent newcomer Daniel Clarke late in the second half. In beautiful weather the first twenty minutes were very ordinary with no chances being created by either side. The Blues, playing in all yellow, though were dominating possession on a very hard dry and dusty pitch. In the 23rd minutes Darren Clarke captured possession and after playing nice football passed to Darren Assiamah whose attempt on goal went just wide. A minute later, after good work by Matthew Batt, he himself took a poke at the target - his shot blazing over. In the 26th captain Craig Ellis was fouled just outside the area - Daniel Stanton's free-kick came to nothing. Wingate continued to dominate with both Darren Clarke and Matthew Batt working dangerously up front. Unfortunately Batt received a knock on 37 minutes and was substituted by new signing Yaw Boateng making his debut. Finally Aveley recorded their first corner on one of their few advances in to Wingate territory in which the ball landed at the feet of Jarreau McCarthy just inside the area. His shot was directed on to the bar and the danger cleared by the astute Wingate defence.

Aveley started the second period brightly and within a minute sub Matt Staines for Aveley hit a long range shot, but over. Wingate reacted well and on 49 minutes put together a great move ending with Mark Gradosielski being bundled over in the area but surprisingly no penalty awarded. The match continued at a fast pace and just on the hour Aveley were awarded a free-kick. A good cross resulted in Jarreau McCarthy rising high to nod home giving the home side a 1-0 lead. However the blues came back strongly and in the 68th Yaw Boateng was pushed over in the area and this time a spot-kick was awarded. GUY MORRIS coolly slotted home in the left hand corner, 1-1. In the 72nd minute sub Leon Osei replaced Mark Gradosielski and two minutes later Joe O'Brien replaced Daniel Stanton as the North Londoners sought out a win. With eleven minutes remaining a long clearance from keeper Ed Thompson caught the Aveley defence flat footed and DARREN CLARKE seized the opportunity sending a looping header to put Wingate in front 2-1. On 83 minutes captain Craig Ellis passed a fine ball to Leon Osei on the left - his cross was only half cleared by the home defence, the ball fell to Joe O'Brien who shot inches wide. Aveley continued to push forward seeking out an equaliser and in injury time forced Ed Thompson to make a brilliant save. But the blues hung on pushing them up in to the top half of the table.

Wingate and Finchley;- Ed Thompson, Darren Assiamah, Mark Weatherstone, Craig Ellis (capt), Billy Amarteifio, Guy Morris, Mark Gradosielski (Leon Osei 72), Daniel Berg, Matthew Batt (Yaw Boateng 37), Daniel Clarke, Daniel Stanton (Joe O'Brien 76).
