Wingate & Finchley 2-4 Burgess Hill Town
Tuesday 26th September 2006

Wingate & Finchley came out second best as Burgess Hill Town won in extra time to set up a 3rd Round tie with AFC Wimbledon. After Burgess Hill took the lead midway through the first half, Wingate & Finchley came out all guns blazing in the second period. It seemed like it was going to be another one of those days where the Club simply couldn’t score, but in the 89th minute Guy Morris won the ball on the halfway line and went on a surging run. He crossed low into the box, and substitute Leon Osei was on hand to lash the ball home for a richly deserved equaliser.

Through extra time the game opened up and would have ended up about 4-4 but for the heroics of the visiting goalkeeper. Burgess Hill scored 3 well-taken breakaway goals in a quick 9 minute spell that left Wingate & Finchley shellshocked. There was still enough time for a consolation as Jon Nichols scored a penalty that had been won by Dan Stanton. Danny Berg saw a header clear the crossbar, whilst Stanton was denied by two wonderful fingertip saves from the keeper. This was not destined to be Wingate & Finchley’s night, however it was extremely encouraging as it was by far the side’s best attacking display of the season so far.

Lineup: Ed Thompson 7, Jirka Houdek 7, Guy Helman 8, Craig Ellis 7, Stephen Badu 7, Guy Morris 7, Leon Wilson 7, Jon Nichols 6, Dean Williams 7, Adam Stolerman 6, Anthony Limbrick 7. Subs: Jon Ellis, Danny Berg 6, Dan Stanton 7, Leon Osei 6, Joe Faulkner.
