On an overcast but dry day we made the long journey to Bury St Edmunds to play Bury Town whom even though were still smarting from a heavy defeat at Witham Town a week earlier were still in the top half of the league and one of the favourites for a play off place at the end of the season. Pitch was heavy and the goal areas well worn.
The first 25 minutes was very entertaining with a lot of good football being played by both sides. A very early free kick in the first minute was weel saved by Gavin King in the Wingate & Finchley goal. After 9 mins a lob from Wingate & Finchley's Ahmadou Seye well tipped over by Dean Greygoose in the Bury Town goal. From the resulting corner the ball was only half cleared by the Bury Town defence but Joe o' Brien's shot goes over the bar.
On 11 mins a powerful shot from Bury Town's Sam Reed is weel saved by Gavin King. On the 14 min a powerful cross from James Gershfield flashes across the box but unfortunately no one could get on the end of it. On 16 mins a powerful shot from 25 yds from Stuart Walker is again well saved by Gavin King in the Wingate & Finchley goal.
A minute later a good shot from Joe o' Brien after fine work by Daniel Clarke is deflected away for a corner to Wingate & Finchley. Wingate and Finchley were now beginning to dominate the game with Ahmadou Seye and Craig Ellis going close, and Daniel Clarke also going close after being put through, but his shot going just wide of the post.
On 28 mins the deadlock was finally broken, James Gershfield received the ball 30 yards from goal and his first time effort rocketed into the back of the net to give Wingate & Finchley the lead. This goal would most probably have won any Goal of the month competition.
A minute later James Gershfield was harshly judged to be offside and a second goal was disallowed.
This though was put right 6 mins later. After fine work by Andy Edmunds on the left his low cros was met by James Gershfield whom slotted the ball in from close range to put Wingate & Finchley 2-0 up.
Craig Elllis had to be substituted in the 40th minute due to injury and Ahmet Rifat came on as a replacement.
Half Time arrived with Wingate & Finchley leading 2-0, and deservedly so.
5 mins into the second half Bury Town almost pulled a goal back but Steve Bugg whom had come on as a second half sub for Bury Town, his shot just went wide.
In the 56th minute the game was all but over. From a Bury free kick Wingate & Finchley broke away and a perfect through ball by Andy Edmunds found Dean Nyman, on for Daniel Clarke at half time, and he cooly slooted the ball into the Bury Town net to put Wingate & Finchley 3-0 up.
Bury Town now throwing caution to the wind tested Gavin King in the 65th minute but the 25yd shot was well saved.
Joe o' Brien almost got a 4th for Wingate & Finchley in the 70th minute after fine work by Nyman and Gershfield, but his shot just goes wide. Tashan replaced Andy Edmunds in the 72nd min, and within 2 mins had 2 attempts on goal, first one going wide, and second one which was going goalwards being blocked by a Bury Town defender with the Bury Town keeper totally stranded.
Ahmet Rifat almost put the icing on the cake in the 82nd minute but his shot was well saved by the Bury Town keeper. Final whistle went, a first away win for Wingate & Finchley, and a first home defeat for Bury Town. On Boxing Day we are at home to Redbridge whom are at present having a very good season, but a repeat performance should enable us to pick up a further 3 points. Kick off this Wednesday is at 1.00pm.
