For the second time this season, Wingate & Finchley fell at the home of Canvey Island – once again with the decisive opening goal coming in first-half stoppage time.
Both teams looked to control possession and kept the ball well at the back, however as soon as either side advanced possession was given away all too cheaply, resulting in very few clear cut chances throughout the first period. Canvey’s tenacious midfielder Gabriel Fanibuyan decided to take matters into his own hands and went on a surging run right through the middle of the park, and when he squared the ball back to Danny Curran he blasted the ball wildly over.
Wingate & Finchley defended well through the first half, restricting Canvey to half chances from the edge of the area – however the defence finally cracked moments before the break from a set piece. A free kick from left wing was delivered in, and as the ball bounced around in an almighty scramble, it broke to Leon Gordon who tapped it home from 6 yards out.
The second half was similar to the first; however more chances were created as the passing tended to improve all round the pitch. Craig Ellis headed over from a Hussein Isa free kick, before at the other end Danny Curran hit the post after a quick Canvey counter-attack.
Canvey’s lead was doubled midway through the second half when Curran capitalised on a very uncharacteristic error from keeper Gavin King to tap home from close range. As Wingate & Finchley made three substitutions in quick succession the game began to open up. New striker Andy Edmunds played nice quick passing move with Dan Stanton and he played the ball in to Tashan Bradshaw-Brown in the area. After a bit of trickery to create himself some space his shot was blocked and fell into the path of Dale Archer who was 8 yards out with the goal gaping, however he mis-kicked his shot leaving the home keeper relieved.
Canvey scored a penalty through Craig Davidson in the closing stages after Bobby Aisien was harshly adjudged of handling the ball by the assistant referee, leaving the home side with a flattering three goal advantage.
