**Video: Dean Williams' Goal**
Wingate & Finchley went out of the FA Cup to a superbly struck goal from DANNY HAYZELDEN 15 minutes from time on an afternoon which will be remembered as much for the superb winning goal as for the moving tribute paid by the players and spectators to the memory of Wingate & Finchley striker Simon Patterson who died tragically last Sunday morning.
Before the game both sets of players gathered round the centre circle where Simon’s number 10 shirt had been placed along with two bouquets of flowers and a photograph, before a minute's silence and a minute of applause each member of the Wingate & Finchley squad placed a flower on the centre circle, many finding themselves unable to hold back the tears for their former colleague taken so early.
The game began very quietly with little action, it was home keeper Ed Thompson who was busiest early on saving well from Danny Harris before making a superb one handed reflex save to deny East Thurrock skipper Scott Holding. In between these two saves 16 year old Tashan Bradshaw-Brown, making his FA Cup debut threaded a superb slide rule pass to Dean Williams who was only denied by Jamie Lunan taking the ball off his toes. Lunan was soon in action again as Williams crossed to Anthony Limbrick but he could not find a way passed Lunan.
Late in the half a Holding corner was met
by the unmarked Kevin Mully but his header went over the
top. The second half had far more of a cup tie atmosphere
about the game with both sides surging forward, it took only
five minutes for the deadlock to be broken with SCOTT
HOLDING turning the ball beyond Thompson. Five minutes later
and referee Tim Ingram played an excellent advantage after a
hard tackle on Craig Ellis left eh Blues skipper writhing in
agony, Anthony Limbrick sent over a cross to the far post where DEAN WILLIAMS showed why he is closing in on the top goal scorer for the Blues since 1994/95 by firing his shot across Lunan and into the bottom corner to level the game.
The Blues looked like they could go and win the game from here and had chances with a free kick being lifted over the wall and another illustration of Bradshaw-Brown fantastic pace ending with a low cross which Dean Williams just failed to connect with. Then with 15 minutes to go the decisive goal came as the ball fell to East Thurrock substitute DANNY HAYZELDEN outside the right hand angle of the penalty area he struck a superb curling effort that nestled in the top corner of the net. A fantastic goal to win a good cup tie played on a day when all the Wingate & Finchley players, officials and supporters were remembering Simon Patterson.
