Wingate & Finchley produced arguably their finest result of the season, with a very hard-fought victory in a tight game at the home of high-flying Enfield Town. The win secured The Blues a first ‘double’ of the season, having beaten Enfield Town 3-0 in the corresponding home fixture – and it had extra special meaning for Dean Nyman, Andy Edmunds and goalscorer Daniel Clarke, all of who have previously played for Enfield Town.
The game started at a frantic pace as both sides went out with attacking intent, in particular Enfield Town’s debutant Michael Deane was causing havoc on the left wing with his excellent close control and quick feet. The game flowed with end to end attacks, and on one such counter for Wingate & Finchley James Gershfield had a chance with his left foot that he sliced wide. Gavin King was alert at the other end and he did well to hold on to a Ricky Crace volley from distance.
Daniel Clarke was having a fine game up front with his strength and tenacity giving the Enfield Town defensive line a host of trouble, and often they resorted to cynical fouls just to stop him. Clarke fully deserved a goal for his efforts, and it duly came in the 36th minute. Dean Nyman reacted quickest to win a loose ball near the halfway line and he drove forward. His shot from 18 yards was blocked and as the ball fell at the feet of Clarke he controlled it and slotted assuredly across the keeper with his left foot.
The game continued in the same vain as before, and the ever-lively Michael Deane stopped a Wingate & Finchley attack and instantly launched the ball upfield to release Crace for an Enfield Town counter-attack. Gavin King however made an excellent block with his arm to deny Crace and preserve the slender lead going into the break.
The second half was also open, however Enfield began to dominate possession and territory. That being said, the Blues defence held firm and indeed Wingate & Finchley were having the greater chances. Dean Nyman sent a left-foot volley over after being set up by Clarke, and Joe O’Brien went inches wide with a trademark drive from distance.
Enfield continued to turn the screw with good possession, but struggled to create any good chances. However they were handed a lifeline in the 87th minute when a penalty was awarded after an unintentional trip by Danny Berg who was beaten to the ball by a fraction of a second. Ricky Crace wasted his golden chance to equalise though as he blasted the penalty high and over the bar – and The Blues held out for a memorable win.
Wingate & Finchley travel to Romford on Tuesday in a rearranged London Senior Cup tie, and then have no game until Saturday 19th January when they travel to Arlesey Town.
