Flackwell Heath 1-2 Wingate & Finchley
Saturday 11th November 2006
A trip down the M40 to Flackwell Heath greeted Wingate & Finchley, who after 2 wins on the trot felt confidence in the air, and Wingate & Finchley arrived at the ground in a relatively buoyant mood. What greeted The Blues however was a pitch that had a slope from one wing to the other that if covered with snow would almost suit a slalom on a ski run more than a football match.

For the first 15 minutes it was all Wingate & Finchley with Flackwell Heath totally on the backfoot. After 4 minutes from a good Guy Helman cross, Daniel Stanton's header was saved well by Nick Hart in the Flackwell goal. After 10 minutes a great through ball from Daniel Stanton found Chris West whose angled shot was also well saved by Nick Hart. Then suddenly out of the blue with Wingate & Finchley dominating proceedings, Flackwell Heath clear a ball from their own half. It seemingly looked harmless as Ed Thompson moved out of his area to the right to meet this ball and kick it clear. His clearance though was poor and possession was regained by Flackwell Heath midway inside the Wingate & Finchley half. The ball was slipped inside to Keiran Thore who noticed that Ed was off his line and his lob beat Ed entering the goal to give Flackwell Heath an undeserved lead after 14 minutes.

This goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Wingate & Finchley for a while and for the next 15 minutes the game became a very scrappy affair, played mostly in the midfield part of the pitch with few attempts on goal made by either team. In the 29th minute after great control by Kevin George on the edge of the Flackwell area, he laid the ball back to Craig Ellis whose shot went high and wide. In the 32nd minute a great long ball from Ahmet Rifat was flicked on by the head of Daniel Stanton on to Kevin George whose poor shot went wide of the goal.

As Wingate & Finchley's momentum increased, it was suddenly stalled due to Guy Helman having to be substituted by Leon Osei due to a hamstring problem. In the 39th minute Wingate & Finchley were awarded a free kick just outside the Flackwell area. Leon Osei's fine shot from this free kick was well saved by Nick Hart in the Flackwell Heath goal. More problems for Wingate & Finchley came in the 40th minute when Anthony Limbrick had to be taken off with what looks like a serious ankle injury, he is replaced by Billy Amarteifio. Unfortunately it turned out that Anthony broke his leg, and will be out of action for some while.

In the 43rd minute a wonderful weaving run by Leon Osei whose pass found Jirka Houdek whose fine cross was headed high and wide by Chris West. Right on half time another fine run by Leon Osei ended with a pinpoint pass to Joe O'Brien whose useful shot was well saved by Nick Hart. Half time arrived with Wingate & Finchley trailing 1-0 in a game they had dominated for long periods but just had not taken the chances that had fallen to them. Also 2 substitutes already used which were definitely not part of the game plan before the match.

The second half started as the first half had finished - with continuing Wingate & Finchley pressure. Finally this pressure was rewarded in the 50th minute. Once again Leon Osei was well involved in a forward move after receiving a long ball on the left which he controlled brilliantly, then beating his man to take the ball to the byline putting over a low cross where Kevin George positioned himself well to drill in a shot from close range for the Wingate & Finchley equaliser.

In the 52nd minute, a short corner from Wingate & Finchley found Leon Osei who crossed the ball which was mispunched by the Flackwell keeper, and Craig Ellis's resulting header was well saved by the Flackwell keeper on his own goal line. In the 63rd minute Kevin George broke free, passed to Jirka Houdek who squared the ball to Joe O'Brien. A wonderful chip by Joe found Daniel Stanton on the edge of the area and Daniel's fine shot went just over the bar, a goal would have been well deserved after such a fine move.

In the 65th minute Wingate & Finchley finally went into a deserved lead. A long ball from Daniel Stanton seemed to be of no danger to Flackwell Heath, but their keeper and defender had a mix up resulting in the keeper totally miskicking the ball which Chris West took full advantage of, running through and placing the ball into the empty net. Wingate & Finchley continued to press forward looking for the 3rd that would seal this game, but on the basis that Flackwell Heath had not troubled Ed Thompson since the 14th minute there seemed to be no problems. Craig Ellis had a first time shot go over the bar after good work from Kevin George in the 70th minute. Wingate & Finchley were so much in control of this game one always expected a further goal to arrive. But it didn't.

Then with the seconds ticking away Flackwell Heath were awarded a free kick in a very dangerous position in what could only have been about their 4th attack of the match. The free kick was only half cleared by the Wingate & Finchley defence and the resulting shot seemed to be entering the top left corner of the goal, but a most incredible save from Ed Thompson palming the ball round the post for a corner resulted. The final whistle went only seconds later.

A third win on the trot for Wingate & Finchley pushing The Blues now up to 10th in the table. A fine performance and the result of 2-1 scarcely suggested how they had dominated this match from start to finish. The Blues now go to Kingsbury this coming Tuesday in the Middlesex Senior Cup First Round followed by a real cracker this coming Saturday away to table topping Harlow at their new ground. This is definitely one match to look forward to.

Lineup: Ed Thompson 7, Jirka Houdek 7, Guy Helman 7 (Leon Osei 8), Craig Ellis 8, Ahmet Rifat 8, Guy Morris 9*, Dan Stanton 7 (Danny Berg 7), Joe O'Brien 8, Chris West 7, Kevin George 8, Anthony Limbrick 7 (Billy Amarteifio 7).
