Wingate & Finchley kept their good run of 2007 going with a thoroughly deserved victory against bottom of the table Flackwell Heath and ensured confidence is high as the Blues begin a run of important matches over the next month.
The Blues opened the scoring on 13 minutes when Leon Osei surged to the bye-line where he cut the ball back to Dean Williams, Williams dummied the visiting defence before squaring to Billy Amarteifio who guided the ball to AHMET RIFAT who slammed the ball into the net from 20 yards out.
The game was all Blues pressure and it was only a surprise that it took another 15 minutes before the score line doubled when DEAN WILLIAMS punished Nick Hart for dropping a Joe O’Brien corner by poking the ball home from six yards out. Three minutes later and it appeared that the Blues were going to increase their advantage as captain Craig Ellis let fly from 35 yards leaving Hart grasping at air as the ball skimmed the roof of the bar. Four minutes before the interval and Flackwell Heath screamed for a goal as from a corner the ball seemed destined for the back of the net only for Ed Thompson to produce two one handed saves that show why he is such a top keeper as having had nothing to do for 41 minutes he was alert to the danger.
The second half began quietly but burst into life on 63 minutes when Flackwell Heath keeper Hart smashed an attempted clearance against CRAIG ELLIS who reacted quicker than any of the defence and rolled the ball into the empty net. The scoring finished two minutes later as Darren Assiamah won a tackle inside his own half and spotted DEAN WILLIAMS just behind the last defender and delivered a well weighted pass which Williams ran onto and smashed into the net.
A great victory for Wingate & Finchley which sees them move upto ninth in the table ahead of Tuesday nights Middlesex Senior Cup Tie against Harrow Borough and next Saturdays visit of Harlow Town to the Abrahams Stadium.
