Wingate & Finchley 2-1 Harlow Town
Saturday 3rd February 2007
Wingate & Finchley continued their superb run of form in 2007 with a thoroughly deserved victory over promotion chasing Harlow Town, this victory and other results moved the Blues up to eighth in the table and eight points from a play off berth. Wingate & Finchley were out of the blocks like lightning not allowing Harlow to settle and forcing the visitors into mistake after mistake with sloppy passing highlighting the Harlow first half performance.

The Blues did not need the errors as they surged forward and on 12 minutes Hardy Pinto-Moreira charged to the bye-line and his low cross was just in front of Dean Williams so allowing the Harlow defence to clear. Two minutes later and DEAN WILLIAMS moved another step closer to Andy Myers' record as he raced clear of the Harlow defence featuring two ex-Wingate men and waited for James Hassell to commit before coolly rolling the ball in at the far post for his 11th goal of the season.

The Blues kept up the onslaught and Leon Osei lifted a free kick over the visiting wall but Hassell saved comfortably. The scores should have been level when another ex-Blue in Danny Boateng rose highest to meet a free kick but directed his header wide of the goal. He was soon shown how to finish when Osei broke down the left and crossed into the middle where Mark Gradosielski met the ball with his head but a defender got in the way directing the ball to JOE O’BRIEN who volleyed home for the Blues second to conclude a superb first half. As was to be expected Harlow Town were chomping at the bit in the second half forcing the Blues to defend very deep and it was hearts in mouths for the Blues followers when on 52 minutes Kenny Davis lobbed Thompson but the ball rebounded off the inside of the post into the arms of Thompson.

The Blues with Craig Ellis performing superbly in midfield and the back line dominating were able to deal with everything that was thrown at them and it looked like the only way Harlow would score would be from a set play and so it proved when with 18 minutes remaining a burst into the area ended with a trip by Darren Assiamah from which MARK TAYLOR who was with Wingate & Finchley for a while stepped up and sent Thompson the wrong way to halve the deficit. Nine minutes from time and Harlow should have levelled matters as Marc Salmon turned on the edge of the area but directed his shot wide. There was still time for Craig Ellis to be set free by Gradosielski but he fired straight at Hassell.

At full time there were wild celebrations from the Blues as the unbeaten run continues, this run will again be tested on Tuesday night when the Blues make the first of two long trips in a week as they travel to fourth place Canvey and then next Saturday the trip is to AFC Sudbury.
