2-2...)
Wingate and Finchley progressed to the semi final of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup with a penalty shoot out victory over Ryman Premier Division side Harrow Borough who featured former Blues favourite Daniel Neilsen in their starting 11.
James Bent, who was to have a night reminiscent of Julio Baptista last week for the Arsenal by scoring an own goal and two for Harrow Borough, gave the Blues a scare in the seventh minute when he turned Steven Badu and with only Thompson to beat fired his shot across the face of the Wingate & Finchley goal with no striker following through to apply the finishing touch. In the 20th minute BENT got his name on the score sheet when after a foul on Daniel Stanton, a Leon Osei free kick found the head of Bent who directed his header beyond Kieran Jimmy to give the Blues the lead, 12 minutes later the Blues almost doubled their advantage when a Guy Morris up and under was flicked on by Danny Berg to Chris West but he fired across the face of goal with no Wingate & Finchley player on hand.
Harrow Borough made a bright start to the second half no doubt with the words of Manager David Howell ringing in their ears and within 10 minutes of the restart the scores were level as JAMES BENT curled a free kick round the Wingate wall and just out of the reach of Thompson. Chances fell to both sides with Daniel Stanton and Chris West being denied by Kieran Jimmy and Ed Thompson diving full length to deny Ricci Campbell and so the game went to extra time.
Early in extra time a corner from the Wingate & Finchley right was met by the head of Craig Ellis whose header seemed destined for the net until former Blue Daniel Neilsen leapt high to head the ball away.
Early in the second period of extra time JIMMY BENT ran into space and rifled home to give Borough the lead. On the stroke of half time Ed Thompson produced a superb one handed save to deny Albert Adomah and maitain the Blues hopes of progress and with two minutes of extra time left a Daniel Stanton cross reached DARREN ASSIAMAH who volley home the equaliser, there was still time for one last moment of drama when with seconds remaining Thompson denied Bent and sent the tie to penalties.
Both sides took their penalties confidently and it came down to sudden death with Thompson saving the vital kick and setting the Blues up for a semi final against Northwood at The Abrahams Stadium in late February.
