Ash Utd Res 4-3 Wingate & Finchley Res
Saturday 29th September 2007
Wingate and Finchley’s reserves suffered their first reverse of the season in this seven goal thriller against league leaders Ash United. Indeed just after the interval Wingate were 4-1 down, but clawed their way back to 4-3 in a scintillating second half after a less than inspiring first period.

Ash, a suburb of Aldershot, almost went ahead in the 12th minute with a soft shot that hit the post, but Wingates’ Calvin Petrie followed up minutes later with a soft lob over the bar form Marcus Sawerrs’ free-kick. But Ash Utd were to open their account in the 22nd with a lob over keeper Daniel Anfossys’ head, 0-1. The north Londoners were not to be outdone and from the kick-off after the goal Lee Rosamond fired inches wide from Calvin Petries’ inch perfect pass. Lee Jay then fired over, but against the run of play Ash doubled their lead when a Wingate pass in their own half was charged down, the loose ball ran to a home player who smacked it home, 0-2. In the 41st Wingate halved Ash’s lead – the excellent Lee Flavin, at right back, sent the ball forward to CALVIN PETRIE who drew the keeper and fired in to an empty net, 1-2. But Ash went further ahead before the break, the ball being crashed home on receipt of a free-kick at the edge of the Wingate area, 1-3.

In to the second half and Ash extended their lead with the ball being played in from their right and an opportunity not to be missed by an onrushing Ash player, 1-4. But Wingate didn’t lay down and die – far from it. For the remainder of the game they almost played Ash off the park. AJIBOLA OLATUNBOSUN found the back of the net from Ben Lauffers’ free kick, 2-4, followed by Lauffer firing wide from Petrie’s penetration in to the Ash half. In the 65th Lee Jay crossed the ball in to the Ash box only for a home player to deflect it in to the net, 3-4. Wingate were now masters of their own destiny playing some glittering football including, in the 76th, a super move resulting in captain Danny Berg playing the ball to Ben Lauffer who blasted wide.

They may have lost by the odd goal but on this showing the reserves could be with the big boys of the Suburban Premier next season.
