Bedfont Res 1-4 Wingate & Finchley Res
Monday 4th February 2008
On a cold windy night I travelled with a very strong reserve team to Bedfont which is situated in the Feltham/Staines area not far from Heathrow airport. I actually travelled from the West End on this Monday night, expecting the journey to take approx an hour and a half, it actually took no more than half an hour, and I finally arrived at the ground at 05.30pm over 2 hours before the due kick off time of 07.45pm.

It was first visit to this ground, and everything about the place showed me why I am in love with the non league scene. Bar area was compact but very welcoming, must admit though the juke box was just a little bit loud to take after a day at the office. Danny Berg whom had also arrived early, his brother and myself had to put up with this noise for almost 2 hours. Other than that found the people at Bedfont very accomodating and we were treated very well.

Team arrived at approx 07.00pm after being delayed in the heavy traffic which obviously I had missed, so team sheet and all preparations had to be actioned relatively quickly.

The ground itself was in relatively good condition, bumpy in places but more than playable. The game started approximately 5 minutes late, by which time the wind had picked up and with the noise of the continuos aircraft arrivals coming into land at Heathrow just above our heads and the sound of the mettle sheets on the terracing being blown about by the wind it was sometimes hard to hear yourself speak.

As stated earlier this was a very strong Wingate & Finchley team with our first team coaching staff of Michael, Ben and Anthony in control for the night, and they started very well, and within 4 minutes had taken the lead through a well taken goal by Danny Berg. Ahma Seye forced the Bedfont keeper to make a good save in the 7th minute as Wingate & Finchley dominated the early periods of the game.

On 18 minutes good work by Andy Edmunds who then crossed low into the area, and James Gershfield shot was again well saved by Joe Marshall in the Bedfont goal.

Wingate & Finchley continued to dominate with Daniel Anfossy having little or nothing to do in the Wingate & Finchley goal.

On 29 minutes Ahma Seye went close again but once again the Bedfont goalkeeper saved well.

Bedfont won a corner on 38 minutes and for the first time in the match Daniel Anfossy was called into action saving well from a well timed header.

After all their domination in the first half Wingate & Finchley were caught cold in the 41st minute, a through ball caught the Wingate and Finchley defence out, and Fearon equalises with a well placed shot past the stranded Daniel Anfossy.

Wingate & Finchley continued to press forward right up to half time but to no avail and amazingly sides were level at half time.

HALF TIME: BEDFONT 1 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 1

After a very pleasant half time interlude with some of the Bedfont committee in the board room where I was told many amusing stories of Bedfonts past along with having interesting conversations about non league football on the whole, infact it was so pleasant that by the time we arrived back to the terraces the second half had already started. Two half time substitutions, Daniel Stanton on for Ahma Seye and Dikiziko on for James Gershfield. First ten minutes both Jerome Boyce and Andy Edmunds went close for Wingate & Finchley but on both occasions were foiled by the impressive Marshall in the Bedfont goal.

Finally though Wingate & Finchley regained the lead in the 56th minute. A great cross from Dikiziko found the head of Eberendu, and his header was well placed giving the Bedfont keeper no chance.

On 65 minutes Wingate and Finchley made their final substitution, Tashan on for Eberendu. On 70 minutes Wingate & Finchley were awarded a penalty for a push in the box. This penalty was calmly tucked away by Tashan to put Wingate & Finchley 3-1 up.

On 78 minutes, game over. After great play by the impressive Andy Edmunds on the left, his low cross across the goal found Tashan who tapped into the empty net from 6 yards to put Wingate & Finchley 4-1 up.

Even though the game was one Wingate & Finchley continued to go forward looking for more goals with Tashan, Stanton and Dikizeko all going close.

No more goals and final whistle went with a comprehensive win to Wingate & Finchley. My man of the match was Andy Edmunds but must say I was well impressed with the young Bedfont keeper Joe Marshall who deserves a lot of credit for his performance.

FINAL SCORE: BEDFONT 1 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 4

Fearon 41 Berg 4 Dikizeko 56 Tashan Pen. 70 Tashan 78

Final Comment

Can only speak highly about the whole set up at Bedfont, and would not hesitate in visiting this club again. My thanks both through our website and this programme for the very warm welcome given to us by all the committee, players and staff of Bedfont FC.
