Despite inexplicably trailing for the best part of 45 minutes during this game, Wingate & Finchley saw off local rivals Boreham Wood in a convincing and fully deserved 6-2 victory.
The home side took the lead after only eleven minutes with their first attack, when Kieron Smith picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and saw Dan Anfossy hovering off his line before sending an unstoppable chip into the top left corner. Wingate & Finchley, who had started the game the brighter of the two teams, were not put off by this goal and continued to dominate possession. Leigh Hatton had two chances from just inside the area but fired over on both occasions.
Deasha Charles also shot too high after an intricate through ball from Ben Lauffer, and the visitors’ shot count continued to rise as Andy Glynne sent a ferocious drive that was well held by keeper Dan Lewis. Despite total control of the game Wingate had to be careful at the back and Anfossy was called on to make an excellent block from Matt Pugh on a rare Boreham Wood attack.
The second half continued the same as the first, with Wingate & Finchley commanding possession, and the floodgates finally opened in the 50th minute. Hatton chipped the ball down the middle for Deasha Charles to chase. The goalkeeper only challenged half-heartedly and Charles capitalised by winning the ball, taking it round him and slotting into the empty net. The second goal was a wonder strike just moments later as Theo Morris audaciously shot from 40 yards and saw the ball arrow into the top left corner with such speed that two goalkeepers would have had trouble saving it.
Chances still flowed for the visitors, and Charles somehow missed an open goal from six yards out. However he made amends by scoring his second goal on the hour mark. Again he was on the receiving end of a Leigh Hatton defence-splitting through-ball and he shot very early from the edge of the area and saw the ball nestle nicely in the bottom corner of the net.
Boreham Wood began to get back in the game, and hit the crossbar from distance, and had a header that hit the post. They then pulled a goal back from a volley by Lorenz Ferrari in the 75th minute. However the win for Wingate & Finchley was secured just minutes later as James Osbourne connected sweetly with a left foot drive and saw the ball bounce in off the right post to regain the two goal lead at 4-2.
Two goals in the final moments added a gloss to the win. Osbourne completely bamboozled his marker and having ran past him inside the area was subsequently hauled down and the referee duly pointed to the spot. Captain Andy Glynne stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from the kick.
In stoppage time Osbourne scored his second as he was on the received end of another chipped through ball down the middle, this one from Ben Lauffer, and he volleyed the ball past the helpless keeper for his side’s sixth goal.
