Dunstable Town Res 3-1 Wingate & Finchley Res
Saturday 1st March 2008
Wingate and Finchley’s second string suffered their second successive defeat, this time at blustery Dunstable and on a bone dry playing surface. But, and where have you heard this before, they did not deserve to lose.

Much of the second half the north Londoners camped in the hosts backyard playing the ball around in short passing sequences but unable to find the back of the net. As regards the first period – okay, we’ll concede that to Dunstable who, for the first twenty minutes took advantage of some poor defending even as early as the third minute. A defender ‘gifted’a pass to a Dunstable player resulting in a low shot in to the far corner. 0-1.

This unsettled the side for a further fifteen or so minutes before captain Andy Glynne and Leigh Hatton played the ball to each other inside a crowded box only for the latter to send a short ball goalwards, but to the keeper. In the 29th Ben Lauffer pulled the trigger from twenty-five yards out only for the powerful effort to be well saved by the home keeper once again. Just before the break keeper Daniel Anfossy made a brilliant save knocking a powerdrive over the bar. Many of the attacks in this half stemmed from the right with Elliott Greene and Deasha Charles chief providers.

I don’t know what fireworks Wingate manager Richard Marchena had in his kit bag because he must have lit at least one of them in the changing room at half-time because the boys ran on to the field in a totally different frame of mind and in a mind to turn the game in their favour. Possession wise they did, but, for a THEO MORRIS goal, they did everything but score over and above that one single goal. In the 50th minute Theo Morris won the ball inside the Dunstable half, rounding home defenders, took the ball to the bye-line, turned the ball inside in to the box for a colleague to pick up only for it to be cleared, but within a minute he decided he would do the finishing job himself. And how eloquently – a twenty-five yarder planted in to the far corner, 1-1. Daniel Anfossy snuffed out a Dunstable attack but in the 61st the hosts were awarded a free-kick.

From inside the semi-circle the home player planted the ball in to the roof of the net Ronaldo style. 1-2. But Wingate continued to play a nice short passing game inside the Dunstable half and in the 64th Theo Morris. Ben Lauffer and Leigh Hatton combined with a cross the field move for Hatton to fire just wide. But in the 70th Dunstable scored a third – Daniel Anfossy cut out a sure fire goal robbing a lone forward on the uptake but seconds later a goalmouth scramble resulted in a short tap-in. In the 75th Morris banged a long one goalwards – well stopped by the keeper followed by, in the closing stages, a Ben Lauffer drive again blocked by the home goalminder.

The result – not a true reflection but all credit to Dunstable. Its goals that win matches.
