AFC Hayes Res 0-2 Wingate & Finchley Res
Saturday 26th January 2008
Wingate & Finchley’s Reserves leapfrogged AFC Hayes in the league table with a spirited and fully deserved away victory. The match started with constant Wingate & Finchley pressure, and they took the lead after only nine minutes through a wonderful strike from Danny Berg. After a quick break down the right wing, the advanced full-back Elliot Green pulled the back inside to Berg who had found space just outside the area and he launched a spectacular first-time shot that curled into the top left corner leaving the keeper stranded.

Theo Morris was a constant threat down the left wing with his pace and strength causing problems for the Hayes defence, and he had a powerful shot from close range that was well blocked by the home keeper. Dan Anfossy in the visiting goal was called upon twice during the half as he was forced to deny Steve Milward at full stretch.

The second half was an even affair with both sides vreating chances. A Dale Archer cross for Wingate & Finchley fell at the head of Theo Morris but he headed over the bar whilst off balance. Hayes started to turn the screw as they looked for the equaliser and had a ten minute spell where they were camped in Wingate & Finchley’s half. However The Blues rode out the storm very well and in the 61st minute scored a second goal to give themselves breathing room. A moment of magic from Morris left the keeper Robert Pietka rooted to the spot as he blasted the ball into the bottom left corner from fully 30 yards out.

The Blues looked solid throughout the game as they defended solidly and regularly pressured Hayes into making mistakes and giving the ball away.

After a quick counter-attack through the middle in the final ten minutes, Danny Berg came extremely close to doubling his goal tally for the day when his left-foot lobbed effort from 20 yards bounced back off the crossbar.

After a late fingertip save by Anfossy who again denied Steve Milward, the Blues held out for an excellent win.
