With better finishing Wingate and Finchleys’reserves should have scored at least four goals, such was their domination particularly in the second half. Build up play from the mid-field was good to excellent but not a lot to write home about up front. AFC Hayes, originally Brook House, went ahead in the third minute – an inswinging free-kick from their right was neatly headed home by Tom Hall.
Four minutes later captain Danny Berg hoofed the ball over from a Marcus Sawyerr cross in the first of many scoring chances for the north Londoners. In the 17th Junior Somuyiwa threaded his way through the AFC Hayes defence, pulled the trigger only for Hayes keeper Dominic Cassells to save. He then, minutes later, collected Blues keeper Dan Anfossy’s clearance, took it through the middle and fired goalwards at Cassells who did well to stop the powerdrive. Just before the break Danny Berg, from the half-way line, fed the ball to Marcus Sawyerr on the left, he played it in to Calvin Petrie who headed over.
Wingate and Finchley totally dominated the second period – in the 51st Petrie crossed the ball in from the bye-line to Somuyiwa who knocked the ball inches wide of the target. Sawyerr sent a low shot wide in the 65th but Hayes came back with a shot from Ashley Cooke which hit the post.
With fourteen minutes remaining CALVIN PETRIE sent a low shot in to the far corner to level the score. Ahmet Rifat forced his way around the Hayes defence, his powerful drive was deflected for a corner. In an endeavour to snatch all three points, so richly deserved, Sawyerr slid a ball inches wide. Thus Wingate had to settle for a share of the spoils but should have been clear-cut winners.
