After a two year absence Wingate and Finchley resumed their membership of the Suburban League with a goalless encounter in Ruislip. Ably managed by ex-Wimbledon player Lionel Morgan, who could have played for Tottenham had it not been for a bad injury which ended his playing career, his charges gave a good account of themselves against a physical Ruislip side.
It took ten minutes for the Wingate boys to get in to their stride until, in the 12th, Ben Lauffer tested the pint-sized Ruislip keeper from a distance, followed by a flick inches round the post from Jamie Hazel picking up an Anthony Limbrick short pass.
Five minutes later he brilliantly stopped a shot from Ruislips’ centre-forward who broke through down the middle. Ruislip were dangerous going forward relying on their lone front man to produce the goods.
Fourteen minutes in to the second half Nathan Eno waltzed through the home defence but sent his final shot across the face of the goal. Then followed Danny Berg clearing off the goal-line from a short shot resulting from a corner. As the game wore on Ruislip slipped in to top gear twice firing across the face of Johnsons’ goal followed by another stunning Johnson save going down to block a shot. With two minutes remaining Danny Berg let fly with a cannon drive inches wide.
This young Wingate side gave their all with the conditions hampering their progress, but each and every player played to their ability and Wingate and Finchley can be proud to have each and everyone on board and well in to the future.
