Return to fixture list
Wingate & Finchley Res 1-2 Tonbridge Angels Res
Saturday 5th January 2008
Wingate & Finchley’s reserve side returned to action after a three week break welcoming Tonbridge Angels to the Abrahams Stadium, Tonbridge Angels whose first team play in the Ryman League Premier Division.

The Blues twice paid the price for not being awake in the early stages of each half, a missed penalty and other chances that had they been taken would have seen the Blues move into the next round but it was not to be.

With barely 90 seconds gone a misunderstanding at the back allowed ASHLEY DANN to capitalise and give the visitors the lead. This setback stirred Wingate into action and they pressed forward striking fear into the visitors backline with Jamie Shaw and Dale Archer chasing everything. It was Archer who had a chance to level the game when he was put through but Grant in the Tonbridge goal stood up well and was able to block the effort. The chances continued to fall for the Blues with Theo Morris, looking impressive but occasionally guilty of over elaboration, who tested Grant with further chances, then on the half hour mark good work from Elliott Green won Wingate a throw in and when the ball came into the box JAMIE SHAW headed home.

It was almost déjà vu at the start of the second half as within two minutes a cross from the left was punched out by Anfossy only as far as MATT NEWMAN who drove home from outside the area for what proved to be the deciding goal. Tonbridge lived dangerously throughout the second period and the introduction of Ashley Ellis almost bought instant reward for the Blues as he latched onto a defence splitting pass and was tripped by Grant leaving referee Jones to award the spot kick. Jamie Shaw stepped up and struck his effort low to the right but Grant got down well to push the ball onto the post and allow his defenders to get back and clear the danger. The Blues pressed throughout the second half but the ball just wouldn’t go into the net and so Tonbridge Angels progress to the next round and this young Wingate & Finchley reserve side can look towards their next outing which is an away trip to Sandhurst Town.

The game was played in an excellent spirit by two sides determined to play football on the near perfect surface at The Abrahams Stadium and the quality of the game was enhanced by the Officials who allowed the game to flow.
