After good back to back wins against Arlesley Town and Enfield Town and climbing to 11th in the league, Wingate and Finchley entered this match against high flying AFC Sudbury with confidence high. Weather was dry but overcast with no wind, perfect conditions.
Wingate and Finchley dominated the possession in the opening minutes without really creating any clear cut chances, but some of the football that was being played by Wingate and Finchley was a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately Daniel Stanton had to be substituted after only 5 mins through a groin injury that he had poicked up in the pre match warm up.
Out of the blue though on 14 minutes a through ball by Sudbury left our defence flat footed as if waiting for an offside flag, winger cut in and squared the ball to Heath who slotted the ball into the empty net giving AFC Sudbury the lead against the run of play.
The next 15 mins were somwhat scrappy with no chances being created by either side.
On 29 mins a great cross from the right ended with Tashan putting the ball in the net, but was disallowed for a questionable foul on the AFC Sudbury keeper.
Wingate and Finchley continued to dominate and on 35 mins a great through ball by Musi found Daniel Clarke who was through on goal, but was flagged for offside, also a very questionable decision.
The rest of the half passed with no major happenings, and was relatively scrappy.
First 20 mins of second half was as the first half totally dominated by Wingate and Finchley though no chances created. In fact neither goalkeeper had had a save to make in the first 65 mins.
On 65 mins AFC Sudbury won a free kick on the left. From this a looping cross found its way into the Wingate AND Finchley box got headed on and was flicked in from close range by Rowe to put AFC Sudbury 2-0 up.
Wingate and Finchley continued to go forward but the problem was that with even all their possession still no major chances were being created.
On 72 mins a good shot by Sudbury's Smith could only be helped into the net by our keeper Gavin King to put AFC Sudbury 3-0 up.
Game was now all but over. Wingate and Finchley though never gave up and with 5 mins remaining a header from Tashan was well saved by the Sudbury keeper.
A 3-0 defeat sounds bad, but this one was underserved, and Wingate and Finchley should take a lot of heart from this performance. Ilford at home this coming Tuesday will hopefully get us back onto the winning ways.
