Wingate and Finchley secured a a much needed and well deserved win at the Abrahams Stadium on Saturday.
In very windy and cold and overcast conditions both teams deserve much credit for a very open game full of incident and some very good and exciting football.
After an opening period of predominantly Wingate and Finchley possession it was Tilbury that took the lead in the 10th minute. Very slack marking by the Wingate and Finchley defence led to Tilbury's Springer being found in a lot of space and slipping the ball into the net from relatively close range.
Wingate and Finchley continued to dominate spending a lot of time in or around the Tilbury penalty area and in the 20th minute were rewarded with a deserved equaliser.
A fine cross by Daniel Clarke was totally misheaded into the air by a Tilbury defender and Ahmet Rifat took advantage of the mistake to head in Wingate and Finchley's equalise from close range.
The game continued to be played at a very fast pace, with Wingate and Finchley continuing to dominate the play, but chances were falling at both ends but none being capitalised on.
Half Time arrived with the score at 1-1.
The second half started as the first half had finished, chances being created at both ends but Wingate and Finchley still dominating the possession. The small crowd though had to wait until the 67th minute for a further goal. From another Wingate and Finchley attack Tilbury booted the ball clear, from this clearance a breakaway occurred and the ball was crossed from the left and was slotted into an empty net by Tilbury's
striker to give Tilbury the lead totally against the run of play.
4 minutes later in the 71st minute Wingate and Finchley deservedly equalised. Ahmet Rifat was found in the area, he beautifully swivelled round the Tilbury defender to shoot goalwards and Tilbury's keeper
could only help the powerful shot into the net.
Five minutes later Wingate and Finchley's deserved winner arrived. Craig Ellis put a great through ball which left Dean Nyman clear on a one to one with the keeper and he beautifully lobbed the keeper from outside the area into the net to put Wingate and Finchley 3-2 up. With credit to Tilbury they never gave up in the final 10 minutes, but could not find an equaliser.
