Bury Town U18 4-1 Wingate & Finchley U18
Sunday 13th January 2008 - Ryman Youth Cup
Wingate & Finchley’s run in the Ryman Youth Cup ended in blustery conditions at Bury Town, although the game was a much closer encounter then the 4-1 score line suggests.

The Blues could have opened the scoring after just 30 seconds as centre half Zeki Suzen strode out from the back and the move finished with Ben Ellis’s chip to the far post which was cleared hastily by the home defence.

The conditions soon became apparent as Sean Moyser latched on to a wind-assisted goal kick but fired wide. However, Moyser made amends on 15 minutes with a close range effort to put Bury Town into the lead.

Ben Ellis had a shot blocked and then Wingate & Finchley’s man of the match Oliver De Wan had a 20-yard effort just over the crossbar, following a neat one-two with Lee Hatton.

But it was the home side that were more clinical in front of goal. Mid way through the half, Craig Nurse’s far post header from a corner doubled their lead. From the resulting kick-off it was almost 3-0, as Adrian Judge broke free to cross for Moyser who’s effort flashed wide.

The visitors continued to create half chances and Daniel Glaude’s header was well saved after a superb curling cross from Oliver De Wan. Goalkeeper, Alex Elf kept the score at 2-0 when he narrowed the angle to block the onrushing Moyser and soon after clutched the ball out of the air with great athleticism from an in swinging cross. However, Moyser continued to trouble the Wingate & Finchley defence and on 33 minutes ran through before releasing the ball to Luke Austin who drove into the far corner to give Bury Town a 3-0 half time lead.

The Blues provided the travelling support with hope of a memorable comeback in the opening stages of the second half. On 47 minutes, Daniel Glaude capitalised on a poor back pass to lob the onrushing goalkeeper but the ball bounced agonisingly over the crossbar as it looked destined for the net. Glaude had a snap shot just wide soon after and then Zeki Suzen went on another run forward before firing a 25-yard strike wide. On 53 minutes, Ben Ellis beat his marker to a loose ball and drove the ball across the 6-yard area but there was no Wingate & Finchley shirt waiting to pounce.

Luke Austin’s shot nearly produced a fourth goal for Bury Town and then Oliver De Wan also fired wide at the other end. De Wan continued to shine and deservedly reduced the arrears on 72 minutes with a deflected shot from the edge of the area. Yet, Bury Town quickly scuppered any thoughts of a comeback as Ben Tooke killed of the tie to make it 4-1 with a left foot shot on 77 minutes following a nicely weighted pass from Austin.

Wingate & Finchley made a triple substitution in an attempt to stage a late rally and one of those substitutions nearly paid off instantly as Zeby Cole broke through at pace only for Chris Stacey to make a good block in the Bury Town goal. Lee Hatton struck a sweet volley just wide and then Oliver De Wan waltzed through the home defence, rounded Stacey but blazed over the bar when it seemed easier to score.
