A penalty awarded to Enfield Town with fifteen minutes remaining ended Wingate and Finchley’s dreams at the first hurdle of a run in the FA Youth Cup. Had the game gone to extra time the Blues could have advanced such was their tenacity despite cramp setting in. It was an entertaining game in front over almost a hundred onlookers on a freezing cold night with the Enfield Town supporters witnessing their side opening their account in only the sixth minute with Matthew Mitchell firing a forty yard rocket in to the back of the net.
Wingate keeper Alex Elf, who had an outstanding game, could do little to stop such a powerful drive, indeed in the 25th minute he turned Shayne Scott’s shot, from a corner, round the post. Enfield Town’s youngsters played some fast interpassing football with Alex Elf suppressing any thoughts they may have had of a goal avalanche. Seven minutes in to the second period Joe Killingback wasn’t far off the target with a powerful drive followed by Daniel Perkins forcing the Enfield keeper Jordane Blake to take a leaf out of Elf’s book and turn the ball around the post.
A Tashan Bradshaw-Brown cannon shot was well saved by Blake, but in the 64th minute the hosts levelled the score when Keiron Street headed home from Alfie Bartrams corner, 1-1. But in the 75th a foul in the area – Matthew Mitchell made no mistake with the spot kick to give them the lead once again. In the final stages Bradshaw-Brown hit the post before Enfield Town almost went further ahead with a curling low shot inches off target.
It could have gone either way, but good luck to Enfield Town who advance in to the next round.
