Wingate & Finchley 2-1 Great Wakering Rovers
Saturday 21st April 2007
The final home league match of season 2006/2007 saw the Blues go out on a winning note and get quick revenge for their heavy defeat against Great Wakering on Tuesday night. With a large crowd in the Abrahams Stadium the Blues started brightly and after only six minutes a combination of Joe O’Brien and Guy Helman split the visiting defence and ended with O’Brien firing into the side netting. With nothing to play for the game went through dull patches but livened up after half an hour as Guy Helman surged forward and found Matthew Batt who forced Green into a save then Darren Assiamah held off his marked but his shot went behind. With six minutes of the half remaining MARTIN TOUHY beat the offside trap and saw Thompson well off his line to give the visitors the lead.

The Blues were determined not to send their supporters away with a defeat and in the second half were dominant with Craig Ellis skimming the post two minutes into the half and then the Blues equalised when Leon Osei charged down the flank and crossed to MATTHEW BATT whose bicycle kick rebounded off the bar and Batt was quickest to the ball and drove home the equaliser. Leon Osei was now terrorising the home defence and another cross found the head of Daniel Clarke but he directed the effort over. With 17 minutes left Clarke was clean through but fired straight at Green. With time running out and everyone thoughts turning to the end of season and a drink in the bar the Blues got the victory when Leon Osei cutting across the edge of the area was hauled down allowing DANNY BERG to step up and send the ball into the bottom corner, this maintains Bergs record of never having missed a penalty and meant the Blues supporters could go home and enjoy their BATTenBERG cake.
