Wingate & Finchley 1-4 Waltham Abbey
Saturday 17th March 2007
Wingate & Finchley went down to defeat against Waltham Abbey conceding four goals with the only highlight for the Blues being Dean Williams 79th minute strike which was his 91st League and Cup goal for the Blues in his 300th appearance taking him above Andy Myers as the leading Wingate & Finchley goal scorer since the Blues joined the Ryman League in season 1995/96.

This game began quietly and it was in the 15th minute when Leon Osei had the first chance of the game curling a free kick onto the net then 11 minutes later Guy Helman surged through the visiting midfield and defence but was denied by a last ditch tackle. It was at the Glebelands end of the ground where from a free kick the ball found the head of Denny Webb who was denied only by the magnificence of Thompson, producing a superb one handed effort. On the stroke of half time the Blues went behind as DAN O’SULLIVAN latched onto a loose ball and drove home.

10 minutes after the break debutant Daniel Clarke was hauled down in the area, Mark Gradosielski put his hand up to take the spot kick but struck his effort wide of the post, this miss was arguably the turning point of the game as within five minutes MARC SONTAG burst into space and drove a low shot under Thompson to double the visitors advantage. The scoring was not over as Ed Thompson conceded a penalty and LEE WHITE showed the way to take a spot kick sending Thompson the wrong way and ensuring the visitors went home with the points.

With 12 minutes remaining LEE SONTAG saw a fierce drive well blocked by Thompson, Sontag watched the ball a fired home the rebound, this is the second time that the Abbey have scored four in the last month. It was fitting that DEAN WILLIAMS on his 300th appearance for the Club should have the final say cutting across the Abbey backline and driving a low right foot shot into the bottom corner for his 91st goal a tally which began also at the Abrahams Stadium against Hornchurch in the 2000/2001 season.
