This was a mid table contest with a definite end of holiday feel as both sides who have struggled for consistency this season battled out a very even contest. On a good surface considering the heavy overnight rain and in blustery conditions the first half was a very even affair with Wingate & Finchley having the better of the chances.
The golden chance of the half fell to Daniel Berg who headed over from close range after excellent work from Dean Nyman on the right hand side. The game was fought out in a tough midfield contest which resulted in Wingate’s Berg and Rifat both seeing yellow as the Referee did well to control a contest which at times looked like it might boil over. However at half time the 0-0 score was a fair reflection of the game even though the visitors may have gone in ahead had they taken the few chances that came their way.
The second half saw Wingate persist with Daniel Clarke playing up front as a sole striker in a 4-3-3 formation with Gershfield and Nyman out wide . The first chance of the half fell to James Gershfield as an excellent through ball saw him clear on goal but an excellent save by Willis in The Waltham Forest goal saved his side from falling behind. The half was once again battled in midfield with the game see sawing . The decisive breakthrough seemed to occur when Bradshawe-Brown and Edmunds replaced Berg and Gershfield within a 5 minute period and the visitors reverted to a 4-4-2 formation with Daniel Clarke now partnered up front by Dean Nyman .
This seemed to be the right move as 10 minutes after the changes Clarke burst through to the right of goal and fired an unstoppable shot past keeper Willis. The game seemed won by the visitors but the sucker punch was to come with only 2 minutes left on the clock as the home team threw everything forward and after a succession of corners one was poorly cleared and Daniel Sabroche rifled home a shot from the edge of the box which eluded the massed ranks of Wingate defenders in the box and crashed into the back of the net.
So in an evenly fought contest with The Blues having slightly the better of the chances it ended up honours even and Wingate & Finchley now have a week off before travelling to high flying Enfield Town next Saturday.
