It had to happen sooner or later and it did on Saturday 10 March the Blues suffered their first League defeat in over two months at Wodson Park home of Ware FC in a match that might have a bearing on the make up of the top five come the end of April.
Wingate & Finchley playing in all yellow never got going and after 17 minutes Steve Horsey got into a very good position and should have had a shot at goal but instead waited for John Frendo to find space, once Frendo was in space Horsey found him but a tame shot went behind. Minutes later and Frendo was able to take another shot only to be denied by the brilliance of Thompson in the Blues goal. From an O’Brien and Stanton free kick Craig Ellis directed his header downwards towards the bottom corner but Luke Woods was able to smother and instantly launch a counter attack which Frendo charged onto but slammed his shot wide.
Thompson was in action again soon diving low to keep the Blues in the game, with better finishing the game could have been over as a contest before the break such was the hosts dominance.
The Blues were on the back foot again seconds into the second half when from a Ware free kick Thompson saved the Blues again, whilst at the other end Leon Wilson fresh from his treble against Ilford last week showed excellent control beating three defenders but firing behind.
The Blues were in the ascendancy and from a Stanton throw in Helman tested Woods who tipped the effort over and then from a free kick Billy Amarteifio headed over and then Hardy Pinto Moreira struck an effort against the post and as the move continued Stanton tried his luck from outside the area but Woods was equal to the task. Joe Stevens found himself in acres of space but with only Thompson to beat failed to hit the target, with the game seemingly destined for a goalless draw the hosts introduced Scott Nielson to the fray and when a corner was not cleared SCOTT NIELSON opened the scoring with eleven minutes remaining. With seven minutes left NIELSON found himself in space on the right of the Wingate area and he drove home the hosts second to seal the points.
