Wingate & Finchley were consigned to defeat by a very professional second half performance by the league’s most in-form team after a very even first half.
The game got off to a flying start, as the home side took the lead after only 6 minutes. A cross from the right wing took a very unexpected and awkward bounce over the two centre backs and fell kindly for striker John Frendo who finished expertly with a sidefooted effort.
However Wingate & Finchley hit straight back with a beautiful passing move that was well deserved of an equaliser. Daniel Clarke played a through ball from the halfway line down the right side for Andy Edmunds to run on to. He outpaced and outmuscled his marker before squaring the ball inside to the waiting James Gershfield who had a simple tap in from six yards to bring the sides level.
The game was very even with both sides passing the ball about well without creating many chances thanks to a pair of very organised defences, however the home side were next to strike – again through Frendo. A long ball was played over the top and with the Wingate back line expecting the offside flag to be raised, the lineman said no and Frendo raced clear with his strike partner to finish off a simple 2-on-1.
The Blues continued to pressure in the half with good possession but without carving out many chances, however the second period was a different story as Ware dominated. Moments after Frendo had struck the post from 20 yards, young full back Kieran Street intelligently placed himself well to make a goalline clearance after keeper Gavin King had been lobbed.
However the game was sealed on 65 minutes when Frendo completed is hat-trick. After a quick break through the middle of the pitch Frendo was given the ball just outside the area and confidently round King and slotted into the empty net.
The Blues came back into the game as Ware eased off in the final 20 minutes, but chances were hard to come by despite some good passing football in midfield as Ware’s defence were simply too well organised.
Next up for Wiingate & Finchley is a home derby with Northwood on Saturday 1st March.
