Three goals in the last six minutes produced a thrilling conclusion to this London Senior Cup tie at the Abrahams Stadium with Wealdstone progressing to face either Barking or Brimsdown Rovers in the next round.
A much changed and young, three members of the team being only 16 years old, Wingate & Finchley team started superbly and had a chance to take the lead inside the first minute as Craig Ellis drilled a firm effort towards the bottom corner where visiting keeper Swain could only parry the effort to 16 year old Tashan Bradshaw-Brown whose follow up effort was cleared off the line.
The visitors soon showed why they had beaten Hendon on Saturday as Montgomery raced to the bye-line and crossed to Cort whose header was easily saved by Thompson. More good work soon followed from Cort this time he set up Dean Papali whose first time volley whistled into the side netting. The game was end to end now and it was Swain who was next in action saving from debutant Theo Davis, recently released by Gillingham. Moments before the break a free kick from Clark found the head of Papali who was about to wheel away in celebration but his powerful header came back off the cross bar.
Wingate were forced into an half time substitution with Billy Amarteifio being replaced by Guy Morris.
With the temperature dropping both sides went for the result in normal time with Thompson denying Montgomery before Swain was called into action saving from Leon Wilson and Theo Davis. For all their efforts the game appeared to heading for an extra 30 minutes until a Bradshaw-Brown shot was pushed behind for a corner which CRAIG ELLIS ghosted into the area and headed home, for what seemed to be the winner but there was a twist to come as with two minutes remaining GAVIN BAMFORD, formerly of Uxbridge, appeared at the far post to head the Wealdstone equaliser. Having pulled back to level it was the visitors who went for the jugular and with time all but up DEAN PAPALI cut across the edge of the area and drove home the winner.
