Witham Town 1-2 Wingate & Finchley
Tuesday 7th November 2006
A long midweek trek to Witham on a Tuesday night is never an ideal journey to prepare for a match, especially after a 10 day break from competitive football. After a fine win against Maldon Town 10 days earlier the last thing that Adam and Michael wished for was this sort of delay for the next match.

Game kicked off 5 minutes late, no reason why, as we were all at the ground in plenty of time for the correct kick off time of 7.45. Wingate & Finchley started brightly and were rewarded for their early pressure after only 8 minutes when a through ball from Chris West was crossed from the left and placed into the net from close range by Kevin George. Wingate & Finchley continued to press forward with Witham offering nothing to the game whatsoever when suddenly on one of Witham's few encroachments into our half they were rewarded with a corner. After a messy goal mouth scramble from this corner where Wingate & Finchley failed in their attempts to clear the ball, it was prodded in from close range by David Hawes for Witham's equaliser after 14 minutes.

The manner of the game did not change as Wingate & Finchley continued to dominate and in the 16th minute Anthony Limbrick had a close range shot cleared off the line. The next 15 minutes the game became very scrappy but still Wingate & Finchley having the majority of possession without creating. In the 38th minute a fine shot from Ahmet Rifat was also cleared off the line. Half Time arrived with the score standing at 1-1 which really did not show Wingate & Finchley's dominance of this match. Second half commenced with 3 corners to Witham in the first 2 minutes, after this though the game turned into a very mediocre affair but with Wingate & Finchley still dominating the possession.

All the action was really crammed into the last 15 minutes. In the 75th minute Daniel Stanton cut in from the left and put in a low cross which was met by Anthony Limbrick whose close range finish found the net to put Wingate & Finchley 2-1 up, and desevedly so. A minute later came a situation that I personally have never seen before. Dean Williams came on as a substitute for Kevin George and as Dean ran onto the pitch to take his position the linesman started flagging furiously. Referee came over to the linesman and after a discussion of approx 30 seconds, the referee beckoned Dean over to him and pulled out the red card.

All very strange, even more so as we are still awaiting the referee's sheet for the match which was not ready as it should have been on the night. We believe Dean was sent off for shouting at the linesman who had requested that he change his cycling shorts he was actually wearing under his shorts due to them being black and not white as per shorts he was wearing. Wingate & Finchley now down to 10 men for the last 14 minutes. Witham suddenly began to raise their game for the first time in this match and seemed to be taking control. Wingate & Finchley were now holding on.

The 90th minute approached and all seemed safe, but the referee then went on to add 9 minutes of injury time, which seemed a lot longer. All nail biting stuff. But Wingate & Finchley held firm for a gutsy and well deserved win 2-1. 2 wins out of 2, looking good. now for a visit to Flackwell Heath on Saturday who are rock bottom. We must though take nothing for granted, but hopefully we can make it 3 wins out of 3.
