Witham Town 4-2 Wingate & Finchley
Tuesday 25th September 2007
After a terrible journey on a wet night with many players and officials having to battle over 3 hours of traffic it was not surprising that The Blues started the match as though they were still stuck in lines of traffic. Wingate looked disorganised as they faced a motivated Witham team also searching for their first win of the season. It quickly became apparent that Witham were up for this battle as they faced a fellow struggler. On a difficult surface the Blues didn’t adapt and seemed to lack the heart for this encounter . After 5 minutes Witham scored from their most popular move a long deep ball into the box and a header home .

The 5th minute goal came from Kevin Hawes after a free kick 40 yards away and was then follows in the 25th minute by Adam Holmes who scored after a deep cross from the right wing. The goal in the 30th minute was the best of the half with a thunderball strike from Adam Holmes from 20 yards and then he capped a fine evening with his hat trick from the penalty spot after Blues keeper Dave Lovell was fortunate only to be shown the yellow card only. After a thoroughly miserable first half the Blues team that came out for the second looked different .

With fire in their bellies they sought to set right their appalling first half. It is true that Witham sat back but Wingate attacked them with venom and chances fell to Danny Berg and James Gershfield which on a better night could have been converted. Wave after wave of attack saw some panic from the Witham bench and this constant pressure was rewarded when Joe O’Brien scored a scorcher from all of 40 yards that was on its way to Southend when it hit the net and then with 2 minutes to go Bobby Aisen bundled one home.

Even after that Witham scrambled one away in a desperate last few minutes. Had the game gone on for another 20 minutes the score might well have seen an away victory. The team must learn that they have to be tight at the start of any match although the very encouraging finish at least keeps the spirits high for Saturdays game at home to Witham when Wingate will still be searching for that elusive first win.

Wingate and Finchley ;- David Lovell, Mark Weatherstone, Dennis Paratusic, Danny Berg (Ahmadou Seye 59), Billy Amarteifio (cap) (injured) (Elvis Balic 61), Bobby Aisen, Daniel Stanton (Hussein Isa 59), Joe O’Brien, Craig Faulconbridge, Daniel Clarke, James Gershfield.
