Wingate & Finchley exacted revenge over Witham Town in style with a 3-2 victory which was more comfortable than the scoreline suggested - and in doing so earned their first win of the season. The Blues took a deserved lead in only the 5th minute after constant early pressure. Hussein Isa floated in a perfect corner from the right and debutant James Cole rose well and headed home from on six yard line.
As the Blues looked to keep the pressure on, James Gershfield went on a twisting run and having beaten the full back saw his shot fly wildly over. Witham Town started to come back into the game midway through the first half, and David Lovell was on hand to excellently deny Cody McDonald with a one-one save with his outstretched feet.
Into the second half, and recent Blues signing Ahmadou Seye was on hand at the back to make a superb last ditch block to deny Grant O’Donnell and keep the scores level. Chances were flowing at both ends, and Cole nearly scored his second of the game from a header but visiting goalkeeper Crumpen did well to divert the ball wide. After the resulting corner was only half-cleared, Daniel Clarke broke free and sent a rasping shot across gaol which Crumpen did well to tip away from danger.
The win was sealed for Wingate & Finchley in the 78th minute when Clarke scored the second goal. Joe O’Brien played an inch perfect defence-splitting ball from inside his own half. Clarke ran on to it perfectly, bore down on the keeper and after his first attempt had been blocked saw his second attempt trickle over the goal line to seal the points. In the 85th minute the icing was added to the cake as Craig Faulconbridge took down a long ball with excellent control, spun and shot under the despairing dive of the helpless Crumpen to make the score 3-0.
After a quick free kick Witham Town earned a consolation goal as a rifled Cody McDonald shot took a wicked deflection off Craig Ellis that left Lovell with no chance. Witham scored another consolation in injury time when Adam Holmes scored a dubiously awarded penalty, but it was too little too late for the visitors.
