Wingate & Finchley 0-2 Wivenhoe Town
Saturday 26th January 2007
Wingate & Finchley put in a performance that was in complete contrast to their excellent showing against Ware when they fought for everything, today the Blues lost everything they tried.

From the outset Wivenhoe Town with former Blues, James Cole and Mark Gradosielski in the squad and Stuart Nethercott starting his first game of the season, were out to get a result and after only seven minutes of almost continual pressure Gavin King was forced into an excellent save. Then on 20 minutes Lee Underwood not for the first time pulled the Wingate defence apart and when he found MICHAEL BROTHERS with time Brothers attempted to lob King who palmed the ball down where upon Brothers reacted and drove home. It was another 19 minutes before the Blues found the target when from a James Gershfield free kick Ahment Rifat climbed highest but saw his header rebound off the bar and to safety.

Wivenhoe continued to go forward at the start of the second half, content in the knowledge that the back four controlled by Stuart Nethercott who used all his experience to deny Daniel Clarke any space would deal with rare Wingate forays forward. On the hour mark Gershfield found substitute Tashan Bradshaw-Brown whose shot was blocked. With 12 minutes remaining Wivenhoe won a corner which was swung over and from a header Joe O'Brien was well placed to clear off the line. However four minutes from time and the Blues were made to pay for not playing to the whistle when after Marc Weatherstone failed to clear Lee Underwood struck his shot under King only for the ball to rebound off the foot of the post to RYAN LOCKETT who rifled his shot into the net.

The Blues will look to bounce back from this performance against Great Wakering Rovers next week at the Abrahams Stadium
