The
Wingate and Finchley youth team looked to add to their
impressive run of four straight victories in all
competitions as they hosted Haringey Borough for the
second time in the league this season due to unsuitable
playing conditions at their home ground.
The game
started with neither side producing any chances to note
but after 20 minutes it was Wingate who converted the
first real chance for either side in the match as
midfielder Charlie Cannell slotted in a great through
ball for JAMES GERSHFIELD, who still at this stage had a
lot to do, as he gathered the ball thirty yards from
goal and beat the Haringey defender for pace before
exquisitely chipping the oncoming Borough goalkeeper to
put the home side one goal to the good. However
Wingate’s lead was short lived as within two minutes
Haringey replied with a fine goal of their own as the
central midfielder picked the ball up in acres of space
before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top left
hand corner of the net. Before the half was over Wingate
still had time to take the lead as GERSHFIELD again
slotted home confidently on his return to the team after
a short spell on the sidelines.
With the
2-1 lead still intact at the half time whistle Wingate
and Finchley looked to build on their lead in the second
period. They had to wait until the 60 minute as striker
LEE ROSAMOND again scored for his sixth consecutive game
as he smashed the ball in from close range after a
scramble in the visitors’ penalty area.
As Wingate
looked to preserve their two goal advantage and Borough
going forward with more conviction as the game went on
it soon became apparent that there would be a tight
finish to the game. Ten minutes later Haringey reduced
the deficit as the striker slotted past de la Fuente.
The away side were soon level another 10 minutes later
as Wingate let their opponents well and truly back into
the game as they conceded a goal just ten minutes from
time. Haringey then had the best of the remaining
minutes going close to a winner on a couple of occasions
but were unable to get past de la Fuente in the Wingate
goal.
With the
two fixtures against Boreham Wood cancelled for the
coming weeks the youth team will have to wait until
after the Christmas break before returning to
competitive duty.
