Hayes U18 6-4 Wingate & Finchley U18
Wednesday 25th October 2006
Kick off for this game had to be delayed for 15 minutes due to it taking all of us just short of 2 hours to travel from Wingate to Church Road Hayes. Weather was miserable, non stop rain for the whole journey, so hard at certain stages even a doubt that we would make this journey to find out the match was cancelled when we arrived at the ground.

We finally arrived at the ground at 7.00pm and thankfully the rain had stopped and the match was definitely on. Hayes's ground was a neat tidy arena with a very well maintained pitch, be it that the grass could have been cut as it seemed just that bit too long. Kick off had been delayed from the original start of 7.30pm to 7.45pm. The first 15 minutes were quiet at both ends not much goalmouth action and little to suggest what was going to happen in the next 75 minutes. Hayes won a corner after 16 minutes, a good corner looping high into the penalty area where Jack Rooney leaped high into the air unchallenged from 5 yards to nod in the opener for Hayes.

Four minutes later Hayes increased the leir lead to 2-0 when a perfect through ball found Oliver Fayed on his own, he rounded our goalkeeper Ben de la Fuente to slot into the empty net. A further 4 minutes later, 23rd minute, it looked curtains for Wingate & Finchley. Another corner, similar to the corner that led to Hayes first goal, once again very poor defending, and the ball was chested in by Oliver Fayed, for his second and Hayes 3rd. 3-0 down, still 67 minutes to go all looked ominous. Wingate went close after 25 minutes, their first decent chance, a fine through ball found James Gershfield, whom found himself free but his decent shot went inches wide.

Only a minute later Wingate & Finchley found their way back into the match. A poor clearance from the Hayes keeper, Kieran Houlihan, found James Gershfield whom lobbed the keeper, and with the keeper back peddalling, could only get his hand to the ball to parry it into the net. 29 minutes on the clock, a free kick from Wingate & Finchley was only partially cleared, landing to Lee Rosmund, whom hit a fine first time shot into the corner of the net for Wingate & finchley's second. Wingate & Finchley now well back into this match. Now it was all Wingate & Finchley, several half chances and alot of possession against a Hayes team that were in shellshock.

From being 3-0 up, pegged back now to 3-2, Hayes were now under immense pressure. Pressure finally paid off in the 43rd minute, a perfect through ball found Lee Rosmund on a one on one with the Hayes keeper, and calmly slid the ball past the goalkeeper into the corner of the net for the equaliser. There now surely could be only one winner in this match, Wingate & Finchley so much on top and Hayes offering little or no resistance. Seconds were ticking away to half time when a silly free kick was giver away by Wingate & Finchley midway in their own half. 45 minutes were already up and we were well into injury time. Free kick was aired into the box and after a scramble in the box in which Wingate & Finchley could not clear their lines, the ball was prodded in from close range by Ryan Clark for Hayes 4th goal.

Half Time whistle went only seconds later, so after Wingate had fought their way back into the game from 3-0 down to 3-3 they let themselves down by conceeding a soft goal right on half time. The way the game was going you could put money on there was going to be more goals in the second half. Second half started, and within 2 minutes of the restart a high cross which seemed to stay in the air for a long time was not collected by our keeper and was prodded in by Ryan Jones for hayes 5th. Worse was top follow only 8 minutes later , in the 55th minute. Wingate & Finchley lost possession in midfield when there did not seem to be any danger, the Hayes striker on gaining possession made a forceful run towards the Wingate & Finchley goal before laying it off to Aga Bossman Briandt whose fine 15 yard shot powered into the net for Hayes 6th.

The young kids of Wingate & Finchley heads were well down and for the next 15 minutes were lucky not to go further behind. Out of the blue though in the 70th minute the first bit of flowing football from Wingate & Finchley in this half was rewarded with a great goal from James Gershfield with a fine shot from the edge of the area for Wingate & Finchley's 4th goal. Once again the tide changed. It was all Wingate & Finchley again. With 6 minutes remaining a grat run by Myles Beerman ended with Myles's shot going inches wide when a goal for his efforts would have been more deserved. Wingate & Finchley continued to press without success, and when the final whistle went, final score ended at After a dreadful start this was even in defeat a fine gutsy performance by our young boys and bodes well for the future talent of this club.

A very enjoyable match and I do reccommend that if any of you do have time to go to support our young kids you should. Guarantee there will not be a dull moment. In the 3 games now played in the league we have won 1 and lost 2, scored 11 goals and conceeded 13.
