| The Wingate and Finchley youth side competed in their fourth cup competition of the season on Tuesday night. With many players still on the sidelines through injury and captain Myles Beerman being called up to the first team for his debut, the youth side were fairly depleted for their first round tie in the Middlesex County Cup against Ruislip Manor.
The game started off as a traditional cup tie, with neither team keeping possession particularly well in a fast paced game.
Wingate though did create a few great chances with Lee Rosamond going close after some excellent work down the left by Alfie Bartram. David Dinkin also went close on several occasions but he, like his strike partner was unable to convert when well positioned in front of goal. In the first period the away side failed to work goalkeeper Ben de la Fuente, with the makeshift back four ably dealing with the limited threat posed by Manor.
Wingate went into the break disappointed to be level but knew that to progress in the competition; they must convert their chances in the second half.
The opening goal for Wingate finally came after 55 minutes when acting captain CHARLIE CANNELL slotted home from a Bartram corner. Wingate and Finchley were looking comfortable at 1-0 but needed a second to kill off the tie and they were rewarded for their dominance after 75 minutes after the on form LEE ROSAMOND turned his defender to hit a sweet left footed strike into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Soon after ROSAMOND added to his ever more impressive scoring run, with his seventh goal in five games as he rounded the keeper before placing the ball into the net to put Wingate three goals to the good.
The remaining ten minutes saw little action but a half chance for Rosamond as he looked for his hat trick but it wasn’t to be. However debutant Sean Daly had a fantastic opportunity to make it 4-0 but his shot went just wide of the post.
Wingate and Finchley put in another good team display although in all honesty were rarely tested against average opponents. This win also makes it three wins on the bounce for the youth team, who as a result, should gain a lot of confidence from recent impressive performances and results.
The youth team are next in action on Wednesday 22nd November, away to Cockfosters in the league.
