| Wingate and Finchley’s Under-18 side, some as young as fifteen or sixteen, dominated extra-time in this FA Youth Cup game, the score being level at 2-2 after ninety minutes. But just three minutes in to the extra-time Welwyn scored a winner in just about their only serious attempt at goal in this extra half-hour. Within a minute of the kick-off the hosts were a goal to the good – a thirty-five yard shot from their right in to the far side-netting. But within ten minutes Danny Glaude careered through the middle setting up James Gershfield whose shot was deflected for a corner.
From the resulting corner, from Joe Killingback, JIMMY LAWLER headed home a leveller. James Gershfield was target man heading just wide in the 16th after some fine work from David Dinkin and Alfie Bartram with Dinkin also going oh so close soon after. Wingate challenged for every ball in this hard fought ninety minutes - -the midfield holding up well and commanding the centre of the park. Young Alfie Bartram, out on the left, dominated the flank with tremendous flare and skill seeing off his opponent on more than one occasion. In to the second half and within four minutes Dinkin thundered a shot which hit the woodwork and out of play.
But two minutes later Welwyn retook the lead – a throw-on in to the middle, ball played forward, knocked on to a forward who powered a shot home leaving Adam Jason, in goal, with little chance of saving. But in the 61st Miles Beerman sent a long pass in to the box, James Gershfield skilfully back-heeled it to the unmarked DAVID DINKIN who finished off, 2-2. As mentioned Welwyn scored a third three minutes in to extra-time, the ball being cannoned home from a cross from their left. From this point on Wingate dominated with James Gershfield and Ben Dela-Fuente going close with Del-Fuente’s shot skimming the bar from a corner. Two brilliant saves towards the end from keeper Adam Jason, but the Blues pressure didn’t pay-off and exited this competition having played so well.
