DISABILITY TOURNAMENT AT SUMMERS LANE

Wingate & Finchley FC will be holding a 5-a-side pan-disability tournament at their Summers Lane ground on Saturday 24th September. The competition will feature a number of teams from the South-East including representatives from St Albans, Hitchin, Enfield, Harrow and Camden.

The tournament is part of the club’s wider disability scheme which has evolving partnerships with Barnet Mencap and the Down Syndrome Association, in addition to two fully affiliated teams in the Camden Step League.  Scheme Project Manager Ricky Deller has seen the club’s vision go from strength to strength in the last few years, with patronage coming from Lord Triesman and Maria Miller MP: “It is something we are rightly proud of and an area we are continually looking to develop. The disability sides are an extension of the Wingate family of teams, and an area we aim to make as inclusive and accessible as possible”

The tournament will run from midday and feature three concurrent mini leagues to cater for differing abilities. Players and staff will then be able to watch The Blues Ryman League match with Horsham, with a full presentation award taking place on the pitch at half-time. Tournament organiser and Community Development Manager Mike Bayly see’s this inaugural tournament as the first of many: “we hope to hold many more of these competitions in the future at locations around the country. Football is the most popular sport in this country and should be made readily available to anyone who wants to play, irrespective of background or ability. We, like so many other volunteers involved with the provision of specialist sporting opportunities, are dedicated to ensuring that the concept of ‘sport for all’ is a real and tangible concept.”

Anyone wishing for further information on the tournament or Wingate & Finchley’s disability scheme, can email Mike on mike@wingatefinchley.com.
