Wingate & Finchley's first home pre-season game of 2015/16 ended in a resounding victory over Slough Town of the Southern League. The Blues made two changes from Thursday's victory at Royston. The game got off to the perfect start when Martel Powell found Rob Laney and his square pass found Ola Sogbanmu, who poked home after only three minutes to put the Blues 1-0 up. 11 minutes later, it was 2-0 when Karl Oliyide received the ball 25 yards out, span and rifled the ball into the top corner, leaving Mark Scott stranded in goal.
It was nearly three after 16 minutes but Powell drilled his shot just wide after excellent build up play between Laney and Tommy Tejan-Sie. The visitors began threatening the Wingate defence but were unable to secure a shot on goal all half. Oliyide nearly doubled his tally on 38 minutes but his superb, arrowing shot was excellently pushed for a corner by a flying Scott. Four minutes later, Oliyide ran down the Slough left side and chipped the ball over an onrushing Scott, but the ball dropped just outside the far post and Slough were lucky to only go into half time two goals down.
Slough's first chances came on 48 minutes when Scott Harris fired just over from inside the area, and four minutes later when Jamie McClurg put the ball just wide from 25 yards after tackling Ahmet Rifat. Eventually, Wingate's resolve was broken. Kieron Street tripped Sean Fraser in the box and Lewis Putman coolly dispatched the penalty, sending Smith the wrong way to halve Slough's deficit.
Mechak Williams nearly put Wingate 3-1 up but his placed effort went just wide on 79 minutes, after superb trickery on the edge of the box. However it was Williams who grabbed the assist to restore the two goal lead. He played a squared pass to Laney, who required two bites of the cherry to slam home and secure the win on 84 minutes.
