Enfield Town preview

Wingate & Finchley travel to Enfield Town for their fourth London derby of the season so far. After seeing off Hendon at home and Harrow Borough away – twice – the Blues will be confident of keeping their 100% record in derbies going. And there could be further tension between the sides as former Enfield Town centre back, Claudiu Vilcu joined Wingate prior to the game against Needham Market. Last season’s games against Enfield Town were a case of third time lucky as two league defeats, 0-2 and 1-2, were followed by an outstanding 3-1 away win in the Ryman League Cup quarter final in mid-February. Billy Healey’s first half hat-trick that night surprised the travelling Wingate fans – who had expected a much tougher game from a usually resilient Enfield side. In both league defeats, however, Vilcu found the net for his then-side – including a late winner at Summers Lane. The sides go into the game separated on goal difference, with 14th placed Enfield eight goals better off than Wingate. Enfield’s last six games have produced a mixed bag of results; two wins, three draws and a defeat away at Folkestone. The visitors have three wins, one draw and two defeats to their name in the same timeframe. As always, Harry Ottaway poses a big threat to the Blues – and is currently Enfield’s top scorer in the league, with five goals. Wingate’s leading marksman is Healey, currently on four – although he faced a spell on the sidelines in the early stages of the season. Wingate have been a big threat from set pieces this season and this could arguably be where the game is won on Saturday afternoon. The height of Rob Laney, John Mbamarah, Sean Cronin, Steve Wales, Healey and Vilcu – poses a great threat to any defence – and is an effective plan B to the Blues’ usual stylish football. As ever, this fiercely contested game will take no prisoners – with the tie being prone to yellow and red cards – and both sides will be extra keen to take home the win as both bragging rights and a league position are at stake.
