Isthmian League North side Bury Town progressed to the First Round Proper of the Isuzu FA Trophy for the first time since 2008 courtesy of a 1-0 win away at Wingate & Finchley, who play their football at step 3 of non-league.
Town striker, Jose Santa de la Paz, scored the only goal of the game when he coolly slotted the ball past Ben Goode in the Wingate goal.
The only action of an overly dull first-half, which the visitors dominated, came when Luke Brown’s audacious effort struck the bar for the step 4 side.
Soon after the restart, Bury Town carved their opposition open and took the lead which, you could argue, was totally against the run of play.
The home side desperately searched for an equaliser and came close through Elliot Long and Zack Newton’s low efforts. However, the Bury Town defence displayed expert resilience.
Moments before the fourth official signalled for 10 additional minutes, Jardel Francis-Adeyinka was presented with the most golden of chances to level the game. His scuffed shot kept Bury in the lead, somehow.
The final whistle blew and Cole Skuse’s valiant Bury Town team advanced to the competition’s First Round Proper, much to the delight of their travelling contingent.
