Tough run continues as Blues fall to Chats

Wingate & Finchley travelled to Chatham Town on Saturday, with both sides going into the game on winless runs, and both looking to secure a win which could propel them back into playoff contention.

The Blues made a fast start, and Toby Byron went on a trademark weaving run and forced a save from Joe Wright in the home goal within five minutes of kickoff. The deadlock was broken after just 15 minutes, when Ogo Obi found Ryan Lowe who cut inside and coolly slotted into the bottom left corner.

It wasn't long before the scores were level, former West Ham striker Freddie Sears finishing well after controlling the ball with his chest. The Blues thought they had regained the lead almost instantly, as Zack Newton found the back of the net, however he was adjudged to be offisde after finishing from Ryan Lowe's shot parried into his path.

Ogo Obi was his usual mischievious self in the final third, and twice before the interval he was brought down in attacking positions, with the referee not pointing to the spot. The hosts flew out of the blocks in the second half and Freddie Sears got his second of the afternoon within a minute of the restart, knocking the ball past Grainger from a right-sided cross to give the Chats a lead for the first time in the match.

The Chats did well to assert their dominance once they had the lead, and Ahmet Rifat rolled the dice with a triple substitution on the hour mark, but it didn't bear fruit as Freddie Sears scored again to complete his hat-trick and make the scoreline 3-1 to Chatham after 73 minutes, the goal in similar fashion to his second, this time knocking the ball up against the crossbar and into the net.

The Blues did not give up, and had a good chance to reduce the deficit in the final minute of normal time, Zack Newton backheeling after good work from Ayo Tanimowo, but keeper Wright was equal to it.

The Blues are in home action on Saturday as we welcome Dartford to the Maurice Rebak Stadium. With Dartford flying high in 4th position, it promises to be a challenge but one that Ahmet Rifat's men will be certainly be up for, you can buy tickets in advance here.
