After the Herts Senior County League (HSCL) was suspended on 17th December - and subsequently null and voided - an inter-league cup competition was announced. The Blues were drawn in Group A of the Premier Division Cup and endureda far from ideal start, losing 2-1 against Chipperfield Corinthians. However, determined not to exit the competition at the group stages, Wingate & Finchley beat Cuffley FC 3-1 in the second game with Kevonte Williams, Tarrel Watson-Noel and Luc Achermann getting the goals.
The must-win final group game came against Hoddesdon Town Reserves on April 17th. The in-form Kevonte Williams bagged a hattrick as the Blues stormed to a 4-1 victory which secured them a place in the semi-final. Drawn against Belstone FC, it was always going to be a tough game, especially given they had former England midfielder Joe Cole playing for them the week before. The Blues remained unfazed by their opponents and focused on their own game. Kevonte Williams scored another 2 goals as they edged Belstone 2-1 to progress to the final of the HSCL Premier Division Cup.
Wingate will now face Ware Sports FC in the final on bank holiday Monday (May 3rd) at Welwyn Garden City’s ground. Managers Lee Protheroe and Tashan Bradshaw-Brown will be hoping Kevonte Williams can add to his 6 goals in 4 games but in reality, it doesn’t matter who scores as long as the Blues have their hands on the trophy at full-time. Make sure to check into the Wingate & Finchley Development team Twitter page for the full-time result.
