Oxhey Jets 5 Wingate & Finchley 1

Wingate & Finchley were resoundingly beaten by Spartan South Midlands side Oxhey Jets, thanks to a four goal flurry in the closing stages in an otherwise even contest for the previous 80 minutes. The home side opened the scoring very early as Lewis Puttman, star of a Sky Sports News article earlier this year, netted past Gavin King. However Oxhey were not ahead for long as Blues talisman Leon Smith levelled the sides shortly afterwards. The grass was long but Wingate were passing the ball around beautifully and pinning back the hosts. At the end of an intricate move Smith was played in but his chip missed the near post by inches. However this was the only chance of real note as the territorial domination did not cut the home side open. Most of the second half was a stalemate as Oxhey seemed content to let the visitors keep possession as any threat was minimal. However the hosts grew in confidence as the score stayed level, and with ten minutes remaining Oxhey took the lead with a header from Cornelius Keating after a wide cross, signalling the start of a dramatic closing spell. The third goal stole the show as the home side secured their victory, with Puttman scoring his second goal catching Gavin King completely unawares with a drive from distance that almost broke the net. He added two more in the final two minutes, both identical breakaway goals, with clinical finishing as the Wingate defence were left dumbstruck.
